Publisher's summary

A heartbreakingly honest, endearing memoir of incredible weight loss by a young food blogger who battles body image issues and overcomes food addiction to find self-acceptance.

All her life, Andie Mitchell had eaten lustily and mindlessly. Food was her babysitter, her best friend, her confidant, and it provided a refuge from her fractured family. But when she stepped on the scale on her 20th birthday and it registered a shocking 268 pounds, she knew she had to change the way she thought about food and herself; that her life was at stake.

It Was Me All Along takes Andie from working class Boston to the romantic streets of Rome, from morbidly obese to half her size, from seeking comfort in anything that came cream-filled and two-to-a-pack to finding balance in exquisite (but modest) bowls of handmade pasta. This story is about much more than a woman who loves food and abhors her body. It is about someone who made changes when her situation seemed too far gone and how she discovered balance in an off-kilter world. More than anything, though, it is the story of her finding beauty in acceptance and learning to love all parts of herself.

Critic reviews

"Andie Mitchell draws you in from the first cupcake - you taste the creamy frosting, feel every hunger pang, and your heart aches right along with hers. She beautifully exposes the dark and painful struggles of weight loss, food addiction, and self-hate that so many in this country face. Read this book because it offers wonderful lessons for healthy living, being kind to yourself, and finding balance. Read it because it's heartbreakingly honest and endearingly educational. (Alison Sweeney, host of NBC’s The Biggest Loser)
"Loving yourself is the bravest thing, and I'm so glad Andie found her bravery and was willing to share it. Cheers to chocolate cake in moderation and happiness in abundance!" (Giada De Laurentiis, author of Giada’s Feel Good Food)
"Andie's story, in which she takes us along for her 135-pound weight loss journey and makes peace with food, is remarkable. She chooses to see the positives from her past, and she realizes that who she was when she was bigger molded her into the person she is today. Andie is an inspiration to anyone who struggles with the challenges of dieting and weight loss." (Gina Homolka, author of The Skinnytaste Cookbook)

Took me a while but so good

I liked this book a lot but it was a little slow sometimes. Overall such an awesome story of weight loss, being someone who has lost a significant amount of weight I really felt connected to the writer!

It was me too

Thank you Andie. Thank you for inspiration and honesty. Pain and pleasure. Laughter and tears. All stories are different but the core of binge eating is the same. The love/hate relationship with food. You give me hope that I can keep going without gaining it all back.

It was like hearing my own story!

I have read dozens of weight loss memoirs hoping that one would tell an ounce of my story. I never came across it until now. At a time when I needed it most, this book spoke to me. I will be forever indebted to Andie Mitchell for sharing her truth, and mine. Read this, it's beautiful.

AMAZING... and healing 💟

I've waited patiently for this book, as a fan of the. lig for many years. it is beautiful and it ignited a fire inside me that I needed lit in the worst way. Thank you for sharing your story. Society promoties quick fixes and unrealistic expectations, and when we fail we tend to give up all together. Andie shows us the beauty within the journey...every day...every step...every stumble...every bite of life! It's uniquely yours and that is truly the only way to be successful in anything. You have to find your own way to it...

Must hear for frosting junkies

Loved it!
The first person who was able to make me feel like I'm not alone. She gives words to my not so secret love of frosting.

Phenomenal

I knew I was going to write this review when I looked up in the gym changing room and saw I was bawling from Andie’s recollection of her childhood. Her story is insightful, honest, lighthearted at times and soul touching. There’s no “you just have to make the decision and stick with it” or “commitment is key” lines in here. It’s an honest account of weight loss and the struggle to keep it off. She is a talented writer and an even better narrator. I know I will listen to this book way more than once.
