You had me at “trust me your child is constipated”

As a retired pediatric emergency physician, who saw thousands of children with abdominal pain and urinary tract infections. I can whole heartedly recommend this book for parents who are potty training. Read this book and learn before even starting potty training and hopefully you will avoid the inevitable stool withholding, constipation, utis and accidents that occur. Constipated kids also have a much higher incidence of appendicitis. Who knows you might actually learn a few things about better foul habits for yourself as well.

Helpful!

Not a huge fan of the narrator. A bit to emphatic and less genuine. But overall the meat of the book was incredibly informative and interesting. This is going to be so helpful!

This book saved My child

My 4 year old had been suffering with potty training. He had been already potty trained for pee for about 2 years but number 2 just wasn’t happening. I never imagined he was constipated as he was always pooping in his undies, so much I switched him back to diapers. We would try again every week, buying new underwear and he would still have “nuggets” or “skid lines” and would cry and cry every time we tried to sit him in the potty to poop.

This book literally saved his life. He had this huge belly which I never thought anything of, which was basically inflammation from having who knows how much poop impacted due to never fully emptying when going number 2. I was totally against the method it suggests but after reading it two times and seeing my child and my family suffer I decided to do it.

We have him for 3 days a full cap of Miralax, and the first two days the magnesium laxative candy we bought at the pharmacy. I put a diaper on and said “the next few days a lot of poop is going to come out, it is ok to poop in your diaper, just get it all out, whenever it comes don’t hold just let it all out” he looked at me so surprised but we did it. After day 3 he was basically pooping water. I gave him Gatorade the whole tome to ensure he was never dehydrated, and normal food. After those three days, I took the miralax to half a cup for three days, and then 1/4 of a cup every other day - and a morning probiotic plus the anImal parade papaya enzymes.

At the same time, we did only for two or three days, the anal exercises it explains in the book. I would get on my belly with him in the frog position and say: ok try to close tour but, now push, like when you go poop. The first times he would let out a little gas, which he thought was Funny. Then I would say ok now close, now push. I did this with him 10 times una row. I did this for three maybe four days, morning and before bed.

We then went to buy him new underwear that he picked out, and I would say to him remember you can close your but when you want to poop, just let me know and then we can run to the potty and push it out then. He had one huge massive accident one evening after his míralax but after that he started pooping every day and his poop became more and more manageable for him - as in softer and easier to push out. We are now 4 weeks out and he is having such a great time pooping. We bought a sticker chart and he has one sticker left to get a remote control boat. It is honestly such a relief to see him have proper control of his bowels and to know there wasn’t any underlying problem.

We are now doing miralax just twice a week and I just do basically give him the tip of a teaspoon. My plan is to take him off in a few weeks. So we haven’t even gone through one full Bottle.

I have to admit I never wanted to use míralax or laxatives, but this book explained everything so clearly and the process with such detail I had the confidence it would benefit my son.

I am forever grateful to Dr. Hodges for writing this book. He saved my son from any more silent pain of hard poops, compacted stools and I would even say he saved my marriage, because potty training was becoming a huge problem for my husband and I.

Now my son has the cutest little flat tummy, and he excitedly calls me to the potty to show me his soft looking poops. And that brings me joy and peace. If you are a parent you understand. :)

So important for every parent and caregiver!

I would love for every pediatrician to read this book. Along with every parents. People don’t usually find out this information until it is too late and we have tried 10 other things first. But this has the answers that most parents need!

Great information

I appreciate the direct strategies I can use TODAY with my son! This book also will help guide my conversation with my son's GI doctor. I disliked the narrator's hypernasal voice and tone, but the information presented in the book was worth getting through the performance.

Unlistenable

The information is good, but the narrator has an unnatural and distracting delivery. So Unfortunate.
