Publisher's summary
In Such a Pretty Fat, Jen Lancaster learned how to come to terms with her body. In My Fair Lazy, she expanded her mind. Now, the New York Times best-selling author gives herself - and her generation - a kick in the X, by facing her greatest challenge to date: acting her age.
Jen is finally ready to put away childish things (except her Barbie Styling Head, of course) and embrace the investment-making, mortgage-carrying, life insurance-having adult she's become.
From getting a mammogram to volunteering at a halfway house, she tackles the grown-up activities she's resisted for years, and with each rite of passage she completes, she'll uncover a valuable - and probably humiliating - life lesson that will ease her path to full-fledged, if reluctant, adult.

Story
New York Times best-selling author Jen Lancaster has lived a life based on re-invention and self-improvement. From Bitter Is the New Black to The Tao of Martha, she’s managed to document her (and her generation’s) attempts to shape up, grow up, and have it all - sometimes with disastrous results...Mistakes are one thing; regrets are another. After a girls’ weekend in Savannah makes her realize that she is - yikes! - middle-aged (binge watching is so the new binge drinking), Jen decides to make a bucket list and seize the day.

One would think that with Jen Lancaster’s impressive list of bestselling self-improvement memoirs that she would have it all together by now. One would be wrong. Jen’s still a little rough around the edges. Suffice it to say, she’s no Martha Stewart. And that is exactly why Jen is going to Martha up and live her life according to the advice of America’s overachieving older sister - the woman who turns lemons into lavender-infused lemonade.

To whom the fat rolls...I'm tired of books where a self-loathing heroine is teased to the point where she starves herself skinny in hopes of a fabulous new life. And I hate the message that women can't possibly be happy until we all fit into our skinny jeans. I don't find these stories uplifting; they make me want to hug these women and take them out for fizzy champagne drinks and cheesecake and explain to them that until they figure out their insides, their outsides don't matter.

Actuary Penny Sinclair has a head for business, and she always makes rational decisions. Knowing that 60 percent of spouses cheat and 50 percent of marriages end in divorce, she wasn't too surprised when her husband had an affair. (That he did so with a woman their daughter's age? Well, that part did sting a bit.) She just made sure she got everything in the divorce, including their lovely old Victorian house. And as soon as her younger daughter has her hipster-fabulous wedding in the backyard, she's trading it in for a condo in downtown Chicago....

Laurie Notaro has proved everyone wrong: she didn’t end up in rehab, prison, or cremated at a tender age. She just went gray. At past fifty, every hair’s root is a symbol of knowledge (she knows how to use a landline), experience (she rode in a car with no seat belts), and superpowers (a gray-haired lady can get away with anything). Though navigating midlife is initially upsetting—the cracking noises coming from her new old body, receiving regular junk mail from mortuaries—Laurie accepts it. And then some.

Story
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is - she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

Number-one New York Times best-selling author Laurie Notaro isn't exactly a domestic goddess - unless that means she fully embraces her genetic hoarding predisposition, sneaks peeks at her husband's daily journal, or has made a list of the people she wants on her Apocalypse Survival team (her husband's not on it). Notaro chronicles her chronic misfortune in the domestic arts, including cooking, cleaning, and putting on Spanx while sweaty (which should technically qualify as an Olympic sport).

Story
The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.

What Doesn't Kill You is the story of how Thomasina Hodges, a.k.a. Tee, loses her job and finds herself. Tee's evolution after her sudden and unexpected outplacement, is loosely based on the stages of grief - denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance, relinquishing, readjusting, and reinvesting. For Tee, losing her job is like a death, but with time, and some bumps, bruises and a new attitude, she comes out on the other side, having reassessed what's important in her life.

Story
What do the lives of Lincoln, Helen Keller, Joan of Arc, and other historical figures have in common with Paula Poundstone? In the hands of this wryly observant and self-deprecating comedian, the answer is outrageously funny and unexpectedly touching. Poundstone compares her crazy life to theirs, as she holds forth on her children, her career, and the time in her life when it appeared she would lose them both.

Story
Number-one New York Times best-selling author Laurie Notaro isn't exactly a domestic goddess - unless that means she fully embraces her genetic hoarding predisposition, sneaks peeks at her husband's daily journal, or has made a list of the people she wants on her Apocalypse Survival team (her husband's not on it). Notaro chronicles her chronic misfortune in the domestic arts, including cooking, cleaning, and putting on Spanx while sweaty (which should technically qualify as an Olympic sport).

From the break-out star of BuzzFeed and the People's Choice Award-winning comedian comes a collection of hilariously anguished essays chronicling awful moments from his life so far, the humiliations of being an adult, and other little indignities. Matt Bellassai has no idea what he's doing. Well, to be fair, he did become semi-Internet famous by getting drunk at work, making him a socially-acceptable - nay - professional alcoholic. He's got some things figured out. But the rest is all just a terrible, disgusting mess.

If there is one thing Lincee Ray has learned over the years, it's that the majority of women on the planet struggle with insecurities. Our skinny jeans mock us. Our just-trying-to-help mothers are just driving us crazy. Our social media feeds taunt us with everyone else's picture-perfect lives. It's enough to send you on a gummy-bear bender while binge-watching Friends reruns and not showering for a week. Lincee knows. She's been there. Right there, in fact. Gummy bears and all.

Jen Mann doesn't have a filter, which sometimes gets her in trouble with her neighbors, fellow PTA moms, and that one woman who tried to sell her sex toys at a home shopping party. Known for her hilariously acerbic observations on her blog, People I Want to Punch in the Throat, Mann now brings her sharp wit to bear on suburban life, marriage, and motherhood in this laugh-out-loud collection of essays. From the politics of joining a play group, to the thrill of moms' night out at the gun range, to the rewards of your most meaningful relationship, nothing's sacred or off-limits.

Jen Lancaster does it again!
Would you consider the audio edition of Jeneration X to be better than the print version?
Yes! I love listening to this book. The way it is written, and with it in audio form, it is like hanging out with one of your friends.
What other book might you compare Jeneration X to and why?
It is another Jen Lancaster book but, bitter is the new black is awesome!
What about Jen Lancaster’s performance did you like?
I like how real she is. No Political Correctness here. Just states it the way she sees it.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
A day in the Life of Jen

Can't get excited about finishing this book
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I have read many of her books. I am listening to this one. I should probably finish it to see if she grows up in the end. It's a sad reminder of the popular attitudes that are shaping our culture. Don't get me wrong. I like snark. But I don't like to bathe in it. This didn't make me laugh as much as I had hoped it would. So if you only get through Thanksgiving, try a few more chapters to see if it gets better.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
I have enjoyed reading Jen Lancaster's earlier work. This one was over the top for me.
Did Jeneration X inspire you to do anything?
I'm inspired to tone down my own melodrama because I can see how tiring it can be for my audience.

If you could sum up Jeneration X in three words, what would they be?
PEE PANTS FUNNY!
What does Jen Lancaster bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
LISTENING TO THE AUDIO BOOK GIVES THE WHOLE THING A MUCH MORE PERSONAL FEEL. ITS SO EASY TO GET LOST IN THE STORIES AND FEEL LIKE YOU ARE JUST SITTING BACK LISTENING TO YOUR BEST FRIEND. JEN IS AN EXTRODINARY STORY TELLER!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

If this is the voice of my generation...
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I can't help but feel that I might like this book better if I were reading it rather than listening to it. After 30 minutes, I felt like she was a really annoying friend that was taking up to much air in the car. You know, THAT girl, who feels like she has to have everyone's attention when she tells her story for a little too long and with over-the-top negativity.
Would you be willing to try another book from Jen Lancaster? Why or why not?
Not really.
How could the performance have been better?
I think it would have been better is the tone had been toned down. The words do the work and don't need the additional vocal heavy lifting.

Just ok
Any additional comments?
This is a quasi-humorous book by an author who seems to really have nothing much to say other than to continually remind the reader/listener that while she used to be poor, she is now very successful. So, we are told about how she gets to go all over the country on her book tour, how she lives in an expensive house in the woods with rich neighbors down the street, about her estate planning problems, and on and on. Frankly, it was all very self-congratulatory and off putting. And... not particularly funny.
