Publisher's summary

When Eustacia Hope is jilted at the altar, her parents decide to save her reputation by sending her to stay with her godmother, Lady Agatha Rayner, a clergyman's widow. Eustacia's mother warns her to have nothing to do with Lady Agatha's brother, the notorious Lord Ashbourne, nor with his son, Lord Ilam.

Soon after her arrival, Eustacia meets Lord Ilam. The two are attracted to one another, and Ilam even takes her to meet his foster family, who farm locally. But it is only after the arrival of Eustacia's estranged fiancé and the unexpected appearance of Lord Ashbourne that matters can be resolved in a way that is satisfactory to all parties.

A Pleasant way to pass the time

I enjoyed this book. It developed slowly which was surprising because it is not that long of a book. It reminded me quite a bit of a Georgette Heyer book. The plot is not driven by action but by words and by people meandering through their routine lives. It wasn't remarkable. It wasn't unforgettable. But it was very enjoyable. If you like Heyer. I think you would like this book.

Jilted

At first the book was hard to get into, but once the story started it was a fairly good story.

Passably enjoyable.

Anne Baker certainly isn't Georgette Heyer, but Ms. Baker does possess a clear writing style that surpasses many contemporary regency romance authors. It isn't a standout book but overall, a pleasant listening experience without gross sentimentality or hyper-sexuality.
