Publisher's summary

Most people are unaware that Mark Twain spent over a decade researching Saint Joan of Arc and wrote what he considered to be his greatest work - Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc - originally published in Harper's Magazine in 1895 as chapters attributed to the fictitious author Sieur Louis de Conte.

When the public found out that Twain was actually the author, many were suspicious, thinking Twain was perpetrating some kind of a joke. Twain's biographer Albert Paine defends Twain saying it is actually his greatest writing: "Considered from every point of view, Joan of Arc is Mark Twain's supreme literary expression, the loftiest, the most delicate, the most luminous example of his work."

Absolutely wonderful

I learned so much from this book. What a truly amazing women she was. Any person who believes in honor and faith will love this book. She would not want to be an idol but this book will make you want to follow her ideals and remember her always.

Loved the book!

Great story. Very well told. Horribly read. I’d love to read it in book form, as the reader was awful.

Well done!

I have very strong, personal reasons to familiarize myself with Jehanne d'Arc's life and character. This book did it in an informative and engaging way with a good storyline to keep my attention and retain information, without getting bogged down with dry facts and over-analysis. Excellently executed historical fiction. Thank you!

Worth the listen

A bit long and repetitive and I wasn't a fan of the narrator. But it's an epic story worth the listen.

it made me weep like a child.

glory to the maid's memory, and shame to the feckless devils of the French revolution that saw fit to dishonor her.

Story for our times!!

Nothing new under the sun. Brutal gas lighting, torture and injustice. Truth, fidelty and purity etc in time of national politics and personal interests and crime rule.

Loved the history but only liked the outlay

I understand that the amazing author felt this was his greatest work. Despite this I did not love the history being presented in the form of a compatriots story of Joan of arc. Perhaps that was just because I was more interested in something that just laid out the facts in a historical rather than story manner. Still, I’d really enjoyed the book and learned much of our central character.

Great story but the narration is painful

I felt like the narrator's voice and expressions were as if he were about to break into a clear eyes commercial. Can't be the same narrator as the other Mark Twain books I've listened too. His voice is clear but I just got the feeling he was trying to make this interesting for a kindergarten class.
