Resumen del Editor

Carmel, a forty year old Irish woman is living a life that’s fine, not exciting or awful, just fine. She has a house, a husband, it’s all ok. She never had kids, but that’s just life, right? She knows she should be grateful. She’s better off than a lot of people. Then one day, out of the blue, she gets a Facebook message, from a total stranger. With information that could transform her life, for better or for much worse.

It could be a scam. It could be malicious. It could be a crazy person. But what if what they say is true? Her finger hovers over the screen. Delete or reply?

Lovely story, recommend it!

Superior narrator(s). Loved the characters and their development, this was a good listen.

We hope to get more in the series, it is especially good to listen to on long drives.

Depressingly memorizing

As the story begins, Carmel is a very depressing character. I wasn’t sure I was going to like this book. However, a chance connection sets in motion a major change to her life and the tone of the book. At the end of the book, Jean Grainger explains what inspired this story and it made me think about another possibility of why tracing one’s Irish Catholic roots can frequently run into dead ends. The scenario of this book is based on some very dark, quite recent, historical truths. Siobhan Waring nails the accents and voices of the wide variety of characters. I am super impressed by her talents. I cannot wait for the sequels to this book. I hope they are in the queue for Audible release with Siobhan as the narrator.

Honesty of the characters!

The story was interesting. The protagonist was a gentleman and the antagonist appeared in so many forms.

From Meek and Mild to Confident and Bold

A wonderful story that draws you as the reader into it. Loved how Carmel decides to find her mother and leaves behind a toxic marriage. At the end, Jean shares where the idea for the story came from. Can't wait to hear or read the next in the series. Wish it was on Audible .

Interesting read

Enjoyed Grainger’s story, as always. Pure Irish storytelling at its best, and based on truth.

The character of Catmel and the circumstance of the times in Ireland

I wish that she contacted Joe before the story ended. it would have brought closer.

Endearing Main Character

The story of Carmel is both endearing and informative. What the author reveals in the afterword about Irish Catholic orphanages of the era is telling, if not shocking. But the character of Sharif and his smooth words of persuasion are just too much of a stretch. The story he spins feels so much like a scam that it makes the reader wonder at Carmel’s gullibility. It doesn’t help that Sharif’s voice is so smooth and oily that the reader recoils from him. The ending, somewhat redeems the his character, but still leaves the reader a bit wary. Carmel, however, grows increasingly endearing as the story concludes.
