Der Autor:
Edgar Allan Poe kommt am 19.Januar 1809 als zweites von drei Kindern in Boston zur Welt.
Seine Mutter Elisabeth, Schauspielerin, stirbt nach nur 3 Jahren. Sein Vater David ebenso Schauspieler verlässt die Familie und den Jungen, so dass der junge Edgar zu John und Frances Allan in Obhut kommt und adoptiert wird.
1826 beginnt er ein Studium an der University of Virginia.
1827 geht er zum Militär und schreibt seine ersten Gedichte: Tamerlane.
Er fängt an, zu trinken und verfällt dem Glückspiel. Er macht Schulden. Gerät mit seinem Pflegevater Allan in Streit. Dieser setzt ihn anschließend vor die Tür. Kurze Zeit später stirbt seine innig geliebte Pflegemutter Francis Allan.
1829 erscheint Al Araf, Tamerlan und kleine Gedichte. Veröffentlichung seiner ersten Kurzgeschichten.
1833 gewinnt er mit seinem Das Manuskript aus der Flasche ein mit 50 Dollar dotiertes Preisausschreiben der Zeitung und wird anschließend Redakteur des "Southern Literary Messenger'' in Richmond.
1834 stirbt sein Pflegevater John, ohne ihm ein Erbe zu hinterlassen.
Er heiratet seine erst 14. Jährige Cousine Virginia Clemm.
Nach der Pleite des "Southern Literary Messenger", verlassen die Eheleute Poe Richmond und ziehen nach New York.
1839 wird er Mitherausgeber des "Gentlemen's Magazine'', gleichzeitig erleidet Virginia eine schwere Krankheit.
Poe veröffentlicht Der Untergang des Hauses Usher, Der Mann, der aufgerieben wurde und William Wilson.
1840 Austritt bei Zeitung und Anfang bei "Grahams Magazine". Veröffentlicht erste Geschichten: Der Doppelmord in der Rue Morgue. Dieser erste Kriminalroman macht ihn zum ersten Detektivautor in der Literaturgeschichte.
Seine erst 19-jährige junge Frau erleidet 1842 ihren ersten Blutsturz und stirbt fünf Jahre später.
Edgar Allan Poe folgt seiner Frau ins Grab am 07.10.1849 unter nicht geklärten Umständen.
Poe gilt heute als der Meister des Grauens und Horrors schlechthin. Viele nach ihm orientierten sich an seiner immensen Schaffenskraft und kruden Phantasie.
