Cinq prisonniers de guerre fuient l'Amérique en ballon et atterrissent sur une île du Pacifique. Ils vont devoir s'organiser en milieu inconnu. L'équipe se compose d'un ingénieur et son domestique, d'un reporter de guerre, un marin, un adolescent et Top, le chien. Étrangement nos aventuriers découvrent une caisse remplie d'un nécessaire de survie (armes, munitions, outils...) qui va les aider à s'installer.
Au fil du temps certains phénomènes les intriguent, lorsque leurs vies sont menacées par une tempête, la maladie ou une attaque de pirates, une présence invisible et bienveillante semble faire en sorte de les tirer d'affaire. L'île ne serait peut-être pas aussi déserte qu'ils l'avaient imaginée...
