About this listen

When a worker goes missing from a North Sea gas platform, there seem to be just two possible explanations - it was a tragic accident or a suicide. It does not take Smith and his detectives long, however, to discover that James Bell led a double life back onshore in Kings Lake, a life complicated enough to make him at least one dangerous enemy. Before the case can be unraveled, Smith must get a new team working together; Waters and Murray are still there, but one of Wilson's men is transferred to him, and the female detective constable from Longmarsh poses some unexpected problems for her new sergeant. Together they begin to investigate the links between the companies and the people that bring ashore the oil and gas, and they also find themselves caught up in the seamier side of life that exists beneath Lake's everyday comings and goings. Jo Evison begins to delve more deeply into the story of the Andretti murders, and Smith himself has to face the fact that he might no longer be considered fit for duty.

British crime literature at its best

What did you love best about Luck and Judgement?

The dialogue is fun, thought provoking, and memorable. The exchanges depict perfectly distinctly different personalities and the complicated relationships they have with one another.

What did you like best about this story?

DC's reflections and insights are profound and memorable: "cynicism gets away from me likea dog escaping beneath the garden gate.". His riff on echo logo used to create more and more and yet still more options, which obfuscates decisn making, is right on and hilarious.

What about Gildart Jackson’s performance did you like?

His voice is splendidly nuanced: rich tone, provocative inflection, varied diction apropos of various characters. All this is very nice indeed

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Hmmm... I would not ue one. No hook needed to elicit appreciation for this gem.

Any additional comments?

This series is a treat.

I just LOVE DC Smith

This is one of my FAVOURITE series. It's got everything I enjoy - twists and turns to the plots, intelligent conversation, wonderful wit and believable characters. Here you'll find humour, thoughtfulness, reflection without descending into the maudlin and, above all, damned good story. Thank you, Peter Grainger and long may you write.

SPECIAL kudos to Gildart Jackson! His narration is absolutely bang-on. He is able to do female characters very well; differentiates well between all the characters and captures the irresistible DC Smith perfectly. He is one of the most delightful men I've "met" in a long time.

DC SMITH IS SUPERB BUT....

I love this series. It has very well formed characters & this time we find him investigating the mystery of a man disappearing from an oil rig at sea. The humour that punctuates this story is quite simply brilliant, it really does make for very enjoyable listening. Some may not like the narrators accent but that is how the central character is. Only downside is I did not find the plot as engaging as other stories in the series. Start with book one, as I think that is best & see how you like it. Book one is brilliant.

Another great story

Each book builds on the last, so I recommend starting at the beginning of the series.

Smith's latest case involves a man that fell off an oil rig...or did he? Subtle clues make Smith question whether the cut and dried answer is correct. His bosses want it to be that way, so of course Smith will investigate every little thing to find the truth. Great listen, again.

Gildart Jackson's narration is perfect, making every character step off the page.

Well worth the credit.

Another D.C.Smith. Great Listen

This is another in a wonderful series. So far each has been as good if not better than the last. Gildart Jackson is the perfect reader for this series.

Becoming my new fave series

I'm enjoying the DC Smith series very much. Love the narrator, who's perfect in giving DC Smith his wit and sarcastic funny flair. Onto the next book.
