About this listen

When a worker goes missing from a North Sea gas platform, there seem to be just two possible explanations - it was a tragic accident or a suicide. It does not take Smith and his detectives long, however, to discover that James Bell led a double life back onshore in Kings Lake, a life complicated enough to make him at least one dangerous enemy. Before the case can be unraveled, Smith must get a new team working together; Waters and Murray are still there, but one of Wilson's men is transferred to him, and the female detective constable from Longmarsh poses some unexpected problems for her new sergeant. Together they begin to investigate the links between the companies and the people that bring ashore the oil and gas, and they also find themselves caught up in the seamier side of life that exists beneath Lake's everyday comings and goings. Jo Evison begins to delve more deeply into the story of the Andretti murders, and Smith himself has to face the fact that he might no longer be considered fit for duty.

Smart and funny

I'm not much for police procedurals but this was great! Found this book on the last sale. Really sorry there are only four more in the series.

Really enjoyable well written detective story

I've come to really love the D.C. Smith series. They aren't ground breaking but they are infinitely entertaining, suspenseful mysteries with likable main characters and (sometimes clever) bad guys. Excellent series for anyone looking for a nice police detective story (and The narrator is phenomenal)

Delightful

I love this series. Smith is such a fun detective to watch, and the cases have a very interesting way of unraveling. i also like that we get bits and pieces of his personal life without it weighing down the story or distracting from the drama. Very well done.

Excellent in all respects

What a great author! And the narrator is perfect. I highly recommend. DC Smith has just the right sense of humor, a wonderful sense of humanity and compassion.

Great story

I love Peter Grainger’s way of writing. The character description are so well done, I can picture in my imagination exactly how they look and act. The performance of the reader is top notch.

Love detective Sgt smith

Can’t get enough of this silly old detective. Can’t wait for the next book Enjoyed the narrator as well. Hopefully waters continues to learn and be just as funny and as good as smith Love the English detective stories. I can’t get enough of them. Makes my long drives to work much more barable

Not as good as the first two

I am really enjoying this series and getting ready to read #4, but did not especially enjoy this one. I noticed in book #2 that author assumes you remember the characters and does nothing to reintroduce them(as per usual in most series) and same with this installment. Made it somewhat confusing as I struggled at first to remember who was who in the story line. Got tired of author putting down well educated people and of course Smith starts making a move on a younger woman rather than someone age appropriate. The crime writer character grated on me with her coyness and supposed wit. i hope she fades away in future installments.
