Publisher's summary

Get Mad: The Complete Series.

Special edition bundle. Three books. Hours and hours of fun, apocalyptic LitRPG, featuring mad scientist powers, along with plenty of laughs. Oh, and killer aliens. Lots of 'em.

I was in my garage, when the space elves addressed the whole world.

They didn't call themselves space elves, of course. Most humans struggled to pronounce Khjurhnalva, so we opted for the easier version. They had a message for us: Forces that had eradicated their species' males were now heading for Earth.

Hungry for our resources, the alien hordes annihilate everything that stands in their way. The space elves offered us access to the System and asked for very little in return. After all, cooperation was vital to the survival of both our species.

I, Mathew Alexander Dunphy, know all of the above is bullshit. I saw the truth with my own eyes and heard it from their beautiful, delicate, deceitful mouths. No one believes me, though. They call me mad.

What reason could the space elves have to lie?

A planet-wide survival reality show? Ridiculous.

enjoyed

I have to say that I enjoyed the premise of the books and the super powers shown. The book does lag abit in the middle and I believe that Matt can be too idealistic. Still it is a great listen and one that captivates my imagination and has me wanting more.

Good voicing, interesting ideas, different from othe LitRPGs I have experienced.

I was given this audiobook for free and have voluntarily left this review.

Strong start but sequels become tiresome

Overall, I loved the premise, storyline, breadth of characters, etc, and would recommend it to anyone. Not sure if the series is done based on the ending, but if so, it ended far too early.

Critically speaking though, the main character slowly becomes the typical egocentric, aloof, passive aggressive, Asperger's laden trope present in far too many LitRPG series. The last two books mostly consist of his inner ramblings and tangential thoughts (especially during fights of all times), with an abrasive degree of hypocrisy. The books would be greatly improved if it focused on the macro level of their party instead of his inner malarkey.

I also found the narrator to be annoying in the last two books. Maybe I didn't realize it in the first, but it's slow and pretentious during the unimportant filler parts, yet rushed with poor annunciation during important parts. It's annoying having to rewind several times to figure out what they're saying. The horrible audio compression certainly doesn't help this; it's ludicrous for three books downloaded at the HQ setting to be 800MB. Audible really needs to stop applying lossy compression to such a degree. As of now, the HQ setting sounds like FM radio with the LQ being AM/HAM quality.

worth it

The box set is worth it because, book 2 They Called Me Madder and book 3 They Called Me Maddest are much shorter than book 1. It's worth a purchase or the use of a credit. If I were to describe the series, I would say LitRPG Hunger Games.

good story

I liked the plot of the story. Mt main issues were that the audio quality isn't the greatest and the reader changed some of the characters voices between books.

hmn

the story lagged a bit for me. there really was not a lot of tension that they were going to do the goal or not. I did not get invested in the characters .

Creative AF

This was pretty fun. The different powers and upgrades were cool as well. I really liked the videogame and movie references and name drops.

A hidden Gem

Matt can be a bit of a prat to his girlfriend at times, but all in all, its a fantastically developed story.

A gloriously irrelevant lit RPG.

The story begit's funny funny and interesthing with a with a somewhat uniqneed lit RPG system but rapidly moves past that. Towards a more serious story but never loses that tongue and cheek. Aspect to the sthis collection covers the whole trilogy and is a excellent purchase.
