Publisher's summary

Malfus's past has finally caught up with him. He's a renegade, an outlaw, a necromancer. Now he's a prisoner.

He's been captured by Inquisitor Deza, to be tried, tortured, and executed for his crimes. But they're ambushed by half-hyena marauders, forcing them to take refuge with a heavily wounded battalion already under siege by the monsters.

Deza only cares about his mission. But another assault by the marauders would be a death sentence for the battalion. The only option remaining is to free Malfus and to raise an army of the dead.

But will the dead be enough to save the living?

Narrator Carries!!!!!!!!

The story took so much to get into…it took more than half way through the book for MC to do anything but complain.
Names of characters than served no purpose but to be there one second and gone then next.
The narrator carried this entire book!!!!! The ending was good so I’m at least looking forward to the next book!

A Grimdark Necromancer tale.

If you are familiar with the Spellmonger series, then you'll enjoy this book. To avoid spoilers, the MC is basically a much younger Minalan as a necromancer.

What a mess

I am ready to give up on this book. I am about 8 HOURS into the story and the Necromancer, you know, the character that the book is about, has done NOTHING! he is in a jail with some handcuffs that don't let him do magic. Awesome. Instead talking about the Necromancer, the author wastes time telling us about the childhood of characters that were just introduced as they were getting killed in a raid.

The narrator does not help. Yes, he does voices but 90% of the book is narrative so a sentence in a character voice after 10 minutes of narration does not help you engage with the book.

If I wanted to read about soldiers, I would have bought a different book. Maybe if it was called "The Knoll Raid", I would have been prepared to be bored. Actually, I wouldn't have even gythe book. But this is specifically about a Necromancer. So, if that is what you were looking for, skip this book.

edit: second half of the book is about the Necromancer so if you skip the first 8 hours, you get the book you expected.

is necromancer really so bad

I'm excited about the next book! the story kept me listening and thinking about the plot while I wasn't able to. What are malfus powers extent? tell me all about the inquisition plan, why is a finger so taboo? This had a great build up to an epic start for what I cannot help but think is going to be an awesome story.

Excellent listen!

This book is worth the credit! The way this book reads it reminds me of the Spellmonger series but instead about a necromancer, if you're a fan of the Spellmonger series this is the perfect book! Narrator is A+!

Loved it, a wonderful debut!

An excellent start from Casey Sutton. It began slow, and built to a great climactic fight. If you’ve always thought that necromancers can be good guys, this is a perfect story for you. Great characters, and I was left wanting more. Will look forward to the next installment.
