Story
It's the 1960s and the world of advertising is coming alive - and it's an exciting world to be part of. Simon Wong, a Chinese-Australian and promising young advertising executive, is sent to Singapore to establish an office. He finds himself thrust into an environment that is at once strangely familiar and profoundly different; one where the rules that govern behaviour - both in business and in personal life - differ wildly from what he is used to. And where all is not what it appears to be.

Story
The four fires in this story are passion, religion, warfare, and fire itself. While there are many more fires that drive the human spirit, love being perhaps the brightest flame of all, it is these four that have moulded us most as Australian people. The four fires give us our sense of place and, for better or for worse, shape our national character.

His mother steers him towards a university education, but with just six months of his degree to go, he signs up for the AIF, driven by a desire to serve his country and plain wanderlust. Danny serves in South-east Asia, spends three and a half years as a POW, and returns a broken man, embittered and facially disfigured. Story
This is Bryce Courtenay's moving tribute to his son, Damon, a hemophiliac who died from medically acquired AIDS on April 1, 1991, at the age of 24. April Fool's Day is controversial, painful and heartbreaking, yet has a gentle humor. It is also life-affirming, and, above all, a testimony to the incredible regenerative strength of love: how when we confront our worst, we can become our best. This tragic yet uplifting story will change the way you think.

Each of us has a place to return to in our minds, a place of clarity and peace, a place to think, to create, to dream. For Bryce Courtenay this place was a waterhole in Africa where he used to escape to as a boy, in search of solitude. One evening, while lingering there, he witnessed the tallest of the great beasts drinking from the waterhole in the moonlight, and was spellbound. Ever since, he drew inspiration from this moment.

Story
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Story
Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

The four fires in this story are passion, religion, warfare, and fire itself. While there are many more fires that drive the human spirit, love being perhaps the brightest flame of all, it is these four that have moulded us most as Australian people. The four fires give us our sense of place and, for better or for worse, shape our national character.

Story
From master storyteller Bryce Courtenay comes a colorful, lusty story set in the 13th century, an epic tale of a Europe torn by religious intolerance. The story centers around Sylvia Honeyeater, who sings like an angel and can literally charm the birds from the trees. The narrative also features the Pied Piper of Hamelin, Francis of Assisi, the Muslim Sultan and his harem, and the fervor that becomes the Children's Crusade and then, later, the Crusades.

Beautifully read, engaging -but may be distressing
Have you listened to any of Humphrey Bower’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No - but I shall seek him out. Hats off to you Mr. Bower!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
YES!
Any additional comments?
The story was tightly woven and, quite frankly, stretched my credulity at the coincidences in it a bit much. However, the author made me love the main characters so much I set that aside. In fact, all of the characterisations were rich - even those of minor characters - and the reader was absolutely superb.I loved that it was set in Sydney, a city I've visited many times, and introduced a side of it with which I am thankfully not familiar.
The subject matter is adult and could be very distressing for people dealing with the trauma of sexual abuse as well as very tender-hearted animal lovers. I think there should be a warning of this as it could trigger very deep hurts.

Loved it
This is my 6th Bryce Courtenay book I've listened to on Audible. As usual there are some difficult themes, this one graphic child sex abuse but it is balanced by humor and human decency. I loved the Matthew Flinders/Trim story. One of the reasons I like Courtenay's books so much is the richly detailed descriptions of life in Australia and Africa since they are places I'll likely never see. Humphrey Bower as narrator is incomparable.

Great Narrator
I really like this narrator which is why I chose this book. I thought the book was decent but I wasnt a big fan of the stories the old man told about the cat. They were way too long and it didnt have anything to do with the story.

Authentic Australia
The story of Billy, Ryan, the characters of Sydney's underbelly, and the city itself ring absolutely true to this Australian, and Humphrey Bower does a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life, with his authentic Australian voices. The story of Trim and Matthew Flinders, gives depth and an historical counterpoint to this tale of despair, courage and redemption in modern Australia.

The Battle of Two Tales
There was a story within a story in this book. The main story about a derelict and a wayward boy is quite good. I liked the way the author develops the characters and allows them to move and grow as we read. The smaller story about Trim the cat was also interesting but at times I felt it really slowed down the main story. I think the story of Trim was important but the author spent way to much time on the minutia of the tale. I got very bored during some of the ocean voyage because it went on and on about things that didn't matter. There was so much of that detail that was not necessary for the main story to move forward. So although I liked the story about Billy, it was at times hard to get through.

A story about a cat?
Another great l book from Bryce Courtenay. Love almost everything Bryce Courtenay wrote and this was not disappointing. Seamlessly weaves the adventure of Captain Flinder and his cat with the recovery of a lawyer living in the streets, and a child being forced into the sex trade. #Australia #addiction #HappyEnding #tagsgiving #sweepstakes
