Publisher's summary

Mere Christianity is C.S. Lewis' forceful and accessible doctrine of Christian belief. First heard as informal radio broadcasts and then published as three separate books, The Case for Christianity, Christian Behavior, and Beyond Personality, Mere Christianity brings together what Lewis sees as the fundamental truths of the religion. Rejecting the boundaries that divide Christianity's many denominations, C.S. Lewis finds a common ground on which all those who have Christian faith can stand together, proving that "at the center of each there is something, or a Someone, who against all divergences of belief, all differences of temperament, all memories of mutual persecution, speaks with the same voice".

Critic reviews

"Geoffrey Howard's performance is superb; he is clear and unhurried, giving just the right emphasis and/or inflection....Whether or not one agrees with Lewis's arguments, it is a pleasure to hear such a skillful reading of an eloquent work." (Library Journal)

This Book will change your life!

Where does Mere Christianity rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is not only the best audio book I have ever listened to, it is the best book I have ever read. This is the powerful work of an honest genius. We as a people have been blessed buy the integrity and talent of this man. I wish I could have spent an hour talking to him, but the next best thing is reading this book, or listening to it. After listening to the book I bought a copy, and gave my kids a copy.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Mere Christianity?

How C.S. Lewis reasoned his way to the knowledge that Christ was really who he said he was. How CS came to the faith in Christ at an advanced age rather than as a Child.

Have you listened to any of Geoffrey Howard’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is a good telling of the book.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book made me take 9 graduate courses in apologetics and read or listen to 150 books and papers on the topic and listen to hundreds of hours of lectures and debates. This is an amazing work.

I put this one off Too Long!

If you could sum up Mere Christianity in three words, what would they be?

Inspiring, Eye Opening

Any additional comments?

I regret that I did not go ahead and listen to this book before now. Of course there are differences of opinion on some minor points, but Mr. Lewis had a God given talent to explain things that open your eyes to a whole new way of thinking about a subject that you may not have considered. My only regret now is that there is not ten stars to rate this book, because in my humble opinion this book is twice the book of most good books.

Mandatory Reading

The narration of this audio book was superb. But fair more important is the excellent content. Mere Christianity should be mandatory reading for all Christians. Christian High School teachers should incorporate it into their literature and/or Bible curriculum. Moreover, Christian colleges should not abandon this tried and true book. Lewis was an apologist for God and the gospel before the title was popular to adopt and before students could major in Apologetics. I have read the book several times and got more out of again through the audio book.

Must read for any Christian

I am so glad that I chose to listen to this book. I have known of it for years, ever since I first became a believer, and yet haven't been able to get myself to read it. Listening was the perfect balance. I think C.S. Lewis does a phenomenal job of breaking down the Christian faith in a way that will speak to any reader, and call you out in a way which makes you want to pursue a stronger relationship with the Lord.

This is a must read for every believer.

CS Lewis is a master at explaining the logic behind the faith. His background as an atheist and a philosophy and Greek studies provides a strong evidence for the gospel.

Mere Christianity: Simplifiying the Bottom Line

Would you consider the audio edition of Mere Christianity to be better than the print version?

I believe that the narrator of Mere Christianity, Mr. Geoffrey Howard, has done a good job in tone and inflection to reflect accurately what C.S. Lewis was getting at in this book. However, being slightly prone to a bad response to being

If you’ve listened to books by C.S. Lewis before, how does this one compare?

I love the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis both print and audio versions; as these are fantasy books and the narrator generally has a gentle voice, the kind a child would love to hear at bedtime.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The moment that moved me particularly in this book was when C.S. Lewis spelled out, clearly and simply (and rather unarguably) what, exactly, Christianity is; what it believes at it's core. I think that it has much value just on that alone.

Any additional comments?

C.S. Lewis comes at the question of what exactly is Christianity in a very logical, very pragmatic way, which is different than what most of us are used to. That is what drew me to this book. I would recommend it to anyone who isn't bothered by a little preaching.

A brilliant man, and a great work.

An excellent articulation of the basics of Christianity with analogies that move your imagination. A must read.

Very good piece of Christian literature

It's nothing revolutionary to the faith, but it wasn't trying to be. It is supposed to be a bare-bones look at what Christianity is as defined by scripture, and it does a very good job at being that. C.S. Lewis takes a very real look at what Christians are supposed to be in a way that challenges those who are Christians to examine themselves before Biblical truth, and gives those who are not associated with Christianity some very interesting things to think about. A few points I disagreed with, but nothing to a degree where I would not recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Christianity.
