Resumen del Editor

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • An enormously engaging portrait of a most beguiling Southern city: “Elegant and wicked.... [This] might be the first true-crime book that makes the reader want to book a bed and breakfast for an extended weekend at the scene of the crime."—The New York Times Book Review

Shots rang out in Savannah's grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. John Berendt's sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative flows like a thoroughly engrossing novel, and yet it is a work of nonfiction. Berendt skillfully interweaves a hugely entertaining first-person account of life in this isolated remnant of the Old South with the unpredictable twists and turns of a landmark murder case.

It is a spellbinding story peopled by a gallery of remarkable characters: the well-bred society ladies of the Married Woman's Card Club; the turbulent young redneck gigolo; the hapless recluse who owns a bottle of poison so powerful it could kill every man, woman, and child in Savannah; the aging and profane Southern belle who is the "soul of pampered self-absorption"; the uproariously funny black drag queen; the acerbic and arrogant antiques dealer; the sweet-talking, piano-playing con artist; young blacks dancing the minuet at the black debutante ball; and Minerva, the voodoo priestess who works her magic in the graveyard at midnight. These and other Savannahians act as a Greek chorus, with Berendt revealing the alliances, hostilities, and intrigues that thrive in a town where everyone knows everyone else.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is a sublime and seductive listening experience. Brilliantly conceived and masterfully written, this true-crime book has become a modern classic.

Reseñas de la Crítica

“John Berendt has written a gorgeous and haunting blend of travel book and murder mystery. It is enchanting and disturbing and deeply atmospheric.”—Michael Herr

“Forceful, clear, gripping, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is the best nonfiction novel since In Cold Blood and a lot more entertaining, since Berendt’s book has everything going for it—snobbism ruthless power, voodoo, local color, and a totally evil estheticism. I read it till dawn.”—Edmund White

“John Berendt has the ability to make the truth read like an exciting novel. This book is original, funny, and bleak—and it beckons quite alluringly to armchair adventurers who are as curious about human nature as about the nature of certain places. I finished reading it convinced that Savannah, may be the greatest performance artist of our day.”—Ann Beattie

Better than I thought it would be

To be honest, I bought this audiobook because it was wildly popular (aka. made into a pop Hollywood movie) and it was set in the Deep South. To my delight, this book kept me engaged for every chapter. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good read, regardless of your state of origin, Southern or not!

Listen to this book!

There is something for everyone in this story. The kindness of strangers, a beautiful town, murder, gossip, and lip singing drag queen that is fabulous, I am serious. The narration is spot on and the chapter at the end by the author ties it all up. Don’t miss out!

Great book

The book is particularly entertaining if you have visited Savannah. The city is one of the main characters in the book. The language and sex are outside of my comfort zone...and I am not sure how they could have been eliminated. It is not a book I would recommend to our adult children or other close family because of the language and sex. So be warned. And, if you are OK with these aspects AND if you have visited Savannah you’ll love the book.

Just as Good the Second Time

I read this when it was first released, and again recently in advance of a trip to Savannah. It is as fun now as then - and the characters are equally as charming. Savannah IS different from other equal-sized cities, and John Berendt did a wonderful job of delivering this unique place and its engaging people to the reader. The narrator does an excellent job of bringing a voice to each of the characters.

Great drama.

It was because of the movie and the book I have been to Savannah five times. Been Into the home where it all happened and found it extremely interesting. Going back in July for 10 days.

Sordid peephole into Savannah's elite parlour

The story gripped me from the very beginning. The dramatic telling of a fantastically twisted story from the view points of a bevy of interesting characters. Everybody has an opinion in this socialite-turned-accused-murder's guilt, and this listener's opinion is this book is it's more than worth a listen.

A must Listen

I loved the movie so I wanted to get the full story. Listening to the book had been a joy. To meet the characters based on real people is a treat. To hear there voices read aloud really adds to the rich tapestry of the story. I highly recommend this to everyone.

Easy listen

Jeff Woodman's voice was upbeat and entertaining. Never had me batting my eyes to try and keep them open. You can easily distinguish between which characters he was speaking as.

The one that started it all

The experience of listening to this audiobook began my love affair with audiobooks long before my love affair with Audible. Wonderfully narrated by Jeff Woodman, the individual personalities come alive in your ears as the story unfolds. The exposition is so engaging and enjoyable--both in writing and narration--that I was hooked before the plot started to reveal itself.
