Publisher's summary

If you could re-create a day, what dark secrets would you uncover?

From New York Times number-one best-selling author Brandon Sanderson comes a detective thriller in a police beat like no other.

Anthony Davis and his partner, Chaz, are the only real people in a city of 20 million, sent there by court order to find out what happened in the real world 10 days ago so that hidden evidence can be brought to light and located in the real city today.

Within the re-created Snapshot of May 1, Davis and Chaz are the ultimate authorities. Flashing their badges will get them past any obstruction and overrule any civil right of the dupes around them. But the crimes the detectives are sent to investigate seem like drudgery - until they stumble upon the grisly results of a mass killing that the precinct headquarters orders them not to investigate. That's one order they have to refuse.

The hunt is on. And though the dupes in the replica city have no future once the Snapshot is turned off, that doesn't mean that both Davis and Chaz will walk out of it alive tonight.

"Narrator William DeMeritt delivers everything one needs in this sci-fi gumshoe novella.... Sanderson's skillful story is made all the more compelling by DeMeritt's deliberate narration." ( AudioFile)

Ghosts in the Machine

An excellent short sf mystery... Nice pacing, well drawn characters, and some crafty mystery within a mystery within a mystery stufff going on... Kinda like Minority Report meets The Butterfly Effect... Performance is better than good and fits w/ the mood and voice of the narrative... Very much worth the small freight for a Sanderson tale that impresses one w/ his range...

Terrific book.

This is Science fiction not fantasy like the majority of Brandon Sanderson's work. He had mostly written novellas for this genre so far. The material is excellent however. The characters and the stories draw you in and connect with you. Snapshot challenges your perceptions and assumptions. The narration by William DeMerrit is excellent as well.

boy did I enjoy this story

I'm so used to Sanderson's 40-plus hour books, it's nice to know he can get to the point.... treat yourself to this novella on your next road trip!

Cool Concept, Cool Execution

This novella didn't blow my mind but was a super fun short read. Narration was solid but not neccisarily super memorable. If you're a fan of hard boiled detective/sci Fi stories, definitely worth the listen

Simple but good

A simple story, but enjoyable. The broad stroaks of the ending are easily anticipated from nearly the beginning, but the specific details were adequately obscured, and the narrative build-up to them was fun enough that I didn't mind. The mythos of the setting was balanced well: enough detail that it made sense, but not so much as to bog down the flow of the story, and with enough ambiguity to allow for a degree of mystery and a deeper exploration in future stories, but not so much as to be distracting.

Nothing discotheque stood out with the narration, good or bad. It was perfectly adequate (which means it was technically good, so things considered).

No problems with the production quality that I noticed.

Good story! Warning partial spoiler

Although a tad predictable in my opinion, it was still well written.
I would have loved to read this as a full length book so that I would have had time to convince myself that there wasn’t going to be a twist. But overall, well written and interesting concept.

A short intro to Sanderson!

I know this isn't even his normal genre, but I really understand what the shouting is about now. One of my criteria for 5 stars is knowing I will think about the book later, and this is super thought provoking even after I SHOULD understand what just happened! A brief, philosophical, action/scifi novel! I wouldn't dare spoil you :)

Rarely do I give a five star . . . but this is one . . . 😱

🐾Really nice postulate with a novel setting and a delicious twist. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 😱

5 stars is great (I rarely give this rating).
4 stars is good (given only to interesting and well-written books).
3 stars is OK (the usual listen I encounter on Audible).
2 stars is poor (and not worth the credit or the listen).
1 star is awful (and to be diss'ed and shunned and spread as thus through out the Audible Universe)!
