"Le système du docteur Goudron et du professeur Plume" explore les limites de la folie humaine. L'histoire se déroule dans un asile isolé, où le narrateur a été enfermé injustement. Alors qu'il observe les étranges pratiques des médecins et des gardiens, il découvre un système étrange et cruel mis en place par le docteur Goudron et le professeur Plume.
Dans "La Chute de la Maison Usher", le narrateur anonyme rend visite à son ami d'enfance, Roderick Usher, dans sa demeure isolée et délabrée. Mais le narrateur trouve étrange le comportement de Roderick et de sa sœur jumelle, Madeline. Ce qui suit est une descente dans la folie, la terreur et l'horreur alors que la maison elle-même semble prendre vie et sombrer lentement dans l'abîme.

"Le Mystère de Marie Roget" est basé sur un fait réel, qui a captivé l'Amérique dans les années 1840. Le détective C. "Le Chat Noir" explore les limites de la culpabilité et de la folie. Un narrateur anonyme raconte comment sa vie a été détruite par son obsession pour un chat noir. Avec sa prose poétique et ses descriptions envoûtantes, Poe crée une atmosphère d'angoisse et de tension qui enveloppe les lecteurs dès les premières lignes.
"La Lettre volée" met en scène l'un des personnages les plus célèbres de Poe, le détective C. Auguste Dupin. Une lettre importante, qui pourrait menacer la sécurité nationale, a été volée.
