Writers shortlisted for the Guardian 4th Estate BAME Short Story Prize read their shortlisted stories

Collected here are the six best stories chosen by the judging panel of the Guardian 4th Estate BAME short story prize 2017.

In them you’ll encounter a range of characters: an Indian soldier fighting for the British in WWII; a teenage girl fasting in a small London flat; an out-of-work dad in an urban playground; a woman cleaning the toilets in Hong Kong International airport; a wealthy Malaysian teenager in his last few days of school; and a septuagenarian arrested on New Year’s Eve.

Read here by the writers themselves, these stories will move, entertain and surprise you – and give a tantalising taste of the future work we might expect from these talented writers.

So bad.

It is apparent that the writers are reading their own stories - as both the writing and the narration is pointless and misery to listen to. The first story by Lisa Smith is so horrid, I had no idea what was going on other than a man was arrested and then went home to his wife. There was no apparent plot. To make it worse, every time Lisa Smith stopped narrating to do "character voices" I wasn't sure if she was speaking words. After about 5 minutes I discerned in the gibberish "Whatya do en mon" or something similar, and realized she was trying to do an accent - possibly Jamaican.
The second story was read so dryly, I coudn't take it anymore and wrote this review.
Horrid. Just horrid.
