About this listen

Eric is a physicist, an angel vivisectionist, and an architect of the future.

He's also an accidental time traveler, stuck in the past and trying to re-create his own future.

Now he's got to save the world for a better tomorrow, but not like everyone does, in general, every day. Oh, no. He has to make a better tomorrow that looks exactly the way he remembers it, or there may be no yesterday, no today, and no Eric!

There is a reason he hates time travel, and it has nothing to do with physics.

Nightlord: Penumbra is the eighth book in the Nightlord series.

Patience! Book starts slow, gets way better!

Early review: I am having trouble finishing this, it is just so tedious to listen to (despite Sean Runnette's always-excellent performance). and almost nothing happens for hours of listening at a time. Normally I enjoy when Garon Whited gets all technical about the workings of magic in his world (I am a computer programmer so I really love how he "programs" his spells), but I cannot get interested in trying to create a Sun for the world that just goes on and on. There is very minimal character interaction or development, just our favorite Night Lord working on his "honey do" list of magical chores. I am 10 hours into a 44-hour experience and hope I can make it! I went and read a bunch of other reviews to see if maybe it gets better if I wait it out, but all the reviews seem to agree with my assessment.

Updated review: the book does get more enjoyable once Eric start populating the defrosted planet and we leave the whole "create a sun" storyline behind. I'm 3/4 of the way through it, and enough interesting stuff is now happening that I can't wait to finish it to see what happens. I'm glad I stuck it out rather than quitting and returning it!

Imcident report #8 was a wild ride

I so was not ready for this one to end! There were some big moments in this. I can not say much with out spoilers. I love this series.

Thank you to Garon and his team for another great entry into this series!

Sean killed it as normal.

Slow, but important!

This wasn’t the most action packed part of the series, but it was all necessary. There are times when a character isn’t going to be constantly involved in action packed battles with Michael Bay level explosions. This book is all about setting up the closing of the loop.

It is still a great story!

It started slow but kept getting better

A great cliff-hanger of an ending. Can’t wait for the next installment. Also a great value for your money at 40 hours.

Book 8 and I'm still craving more

I love the writing style, the narration and the overall adventure that is in this literature. (spoiler) I have to say that this book was like every day in the life of...without the big bad to conquer. It's a nice pace for where we are in the series, so long as book 9 comes at us with more story through-line.

I'm glad to have found this series as I find the critical thinking skills and the methodology used by the character to be soothing and engaging.

some good, some not so good.

huge fan of the series, but this book felt like filler more than anything. I'm happy to have more of the story, with new bits of world building and character development, but it did feel like not much of consequence happened in this book.
Having waited with much anticipation, it feels like a bit of a let down.

********SPOILERS below**********

cons:

I wish we had more Phoebe stories, felt like this book didn't hit the mark with Phoebe's story. Also dusty didn't like shepherd her soul or anything like he did with Tort, she's just gone. rip.

Eric couldve spent more time in Fairy, would've been fun.

Felt like Touta was just written off pretty quick, making the Touta arc as a whole less impactful.

Last book we were eagerly waiting for Eric to get on with his angel experiments, then they're just already done at the start of this one and we only get snippets about them. Then they don't really impact the story much at all, he builds dusty a funny hat.

The sun project seemed to drag on, the book as whole feels like Eric just checking off to do list items. understandable but the most engaging arc of the story.

pros

Eric and Velena just having fun with earth timelines was a fun diversion,

firebrand story progress, love to see it, even if it wasn't until the end of the book.

Eric playing with chaos was really interesting

wrethven story progress

I enjoyed the recurring "zero days" since Eric's last lab accident joke.

Overall, I love this series and will definitely pick up the next book, but wish more things of significance happened in this book. Phoebe's death was probably the most significant event, and we didn't really get any information around it and Eric quickly moves on from it.
