Publisher's summary

Dying isn't what it used to be.

Wes Cooper was dead. Then he wasn't-though he's not exactly alive, either. As an immortal not-ghost, he can transition between this world and the otherplane, which makes him the perfect thief for hire. For 70 years he's made a "living" returning items to their rightful owners, seeing his fair share of the bizarre in the process. But he's never witnessed murder. Until now.

His latest mission brings him more than he bargained for: a very-dead actor who is definitely going to stay that way. It's just Wes's luck that his ex-boyfriend, Detective Hudson Rojas, is assigned to the case. Hudson broke Wes's heart years ago - and could again, given he's rocking a hot silver-fox look that shouldn't be legal.

As they work together to track down the murderer before anyone else gets hurt, it becomes clear Wes and Hudson have unfinished business. And when a secret Hudson's been keeping threatens more than just their happiness, it might mean the end of their not-life together - permanently.

Contains mature themes.

Not What I Expected...

When I read the outline for this book, I was slightly intrigued and wanted to know more. Well, I'm not a spoiler but I will say...it was not what I was expecting...it was so much more. Meeting Wes Cooper and Hudson Rojas was interesting and you could feel the unresolved feelings between the two through the words of the author (Burke) and the delivery of the words by Boudreaux. Thrust back together after some time, the intense feelings are palatable. Murder and mayhem ensue...not to mention some plots and twists that involve the paranormal and supernatural. A great start to a series and I look forward to reading the next section of the story...

Interesting, Suspenseful, and Entertaining Listen

Not Dead Yet is a great start to a fantastic series (I recommend all of the books, whether you read or listen to them.) It’s a unique twist in the world of paranormal romance that is refreshing. Told from the perspective of Wes, a “not ghost” who was brought back to life by a misfired spell after he died in the 1930’s, who witnesses a murder while in the “other plane.” This leads him to get back in touch with his ex-boyfriend Hudson, a detective on the police force. Together they work to determine who, or what, the murderer is before something catastrophic happens. That’s about as vague as I can get without giving anything away. The fun of this book is the new discoveries that happen around every turn.

Wes is a character that could have been really annoying, but he goes through a lot of self-reflection and growth that makes him much more relatable and likeable. Hudson also wrestles some personal demons and makes strides to becoming a better person. The supporting characters add depth to the picture and play important roles both in this book and subsequent books in the series. There is plenty of humor and snark, but it doesn’t go overboard and overwhelm the story. While the romance between Wes and Hudson is important, the suspense and action in the story are more prevalent. There are some good sex scenes, but I really like that the characters are not constant balls of hormones.

Greg Boudreaux is an amazing narrator and does a fantastic job here. His character voices are distinguishable without being distracting or annoying. The pacing and inflections are perfect. I always enjoy listening to his performances.

ghost and vampire

This story was so fun. Hudson and Wes are great together. Vamp Jr. and Lexi. They are all great characters and the narrator does such a fabulous job of getting all of them.

I had such a fun time listening to this book. love the story and the narrator.

It’d be better without one of the mcs

Greg Boudreaux is a fantastic narrator. He brought the book to life perfectly.

I liked the story overall. I also liked the not ghost character. I’ve read a fair amount of paranormal romance and it’s nice to get something a little different once in a while.
The story kept me interested and the mystery kept me guessing. I thought the character development and world building was great.

Where it goes wrong for me is Hudson. I get he’s the gruff cop type who pushes people away to protect them but there was absolutely nothing I could see that would make Wes want to keep coming back.
He was rude, abrasive, and sometimes just plain mean.
I understand Wes is supposed to be Demi and therefore isn’t attracted to a lot of people but if it was between Hudson and being alone for eternity I’d just stay single.

As a character Hudson was fine. I didn’t like him but I understood him.
As a love interest he was terrible.
Wes kept trying and Hudson just kept pushing him away and then sometimes even going so far as to gaslight him for it. Then in the end we’re just supposed to forget he was an utter [redacted] because he changed his mind?

He spent 90% of the book pushing Wes away and then just randomly decides he actually does like Wes after all and all is forgiven?

Maybe it’s wishful thinking but I’m kind of hoping book 2 is Wes signing up for a dating app to get over his breakup with Hudson who decided he wanted to move to Australia or something and just disappeared.

Engaging, with a sinful voice

Slow burn with personal quirks. Can a cop and a thief find a middle ground before the Dark Presence takes away their HEA? Great read. Definite recommendation for the permanent collection

So good

I’m ashamed to admit that I didn’t have very high expectations for this book. I was so wrong, this book is so good. I loved it so much. Wes is such a lovable character and Hudson grew on me (though I wanted to reach into the book and slap in at one point). The story was amazing, there were enough plot twists that I never guessed who the “bad guy” was until it was revealed, which is rare for me, I usually have that figured out right away. I actually laughed out loud, which is also rare for me, I read a lot of book with humor and even though I think they are funny I rarely laugh out loud. I also cried, which is a lot more common for me, but I sometimes judge how well a book is written if it didn’t make me cry. I love when authors pull the emotions out of me.
The narrator also did a great job bringing the characters to life. The narrator really gave this book the energy it deserves.
I don’t have a single negative thing to say about this book. Which is also rare for me, lol, I’m picky. I was so happy when I got to the end and realized that there is another book in the series. I can’t wait to get started on that one!
