About this listen

From Eric Sparling, author of Tantramar, comes a novel of horror that pits one man against nature...and against something wholly unnatural.

Phil Truss is a dead man walking. An inoperable brain tumour has sealed his fate, and there’s nothing he can do about it, even with his substantial fortune. But he can decide how to live his last remaining days.

What he wants most is to achieve a feat few ever have: summiting the dreaded mountain K2. It’s the second highest peak in the world — and one of the most treacherous and deadly ascents known to man.

Guided by a team of world class climbers, Phil soon finds himself scaling the slopes, his dying wish in sight. However, his dream quickly descends into a nightmare as a series of mysterious and lethal events plagues Phil and his party, and he begins to sense they’re not accidents. At first, Phil believes his tumour is twisting his perception of reality.

He couldn’t be more wrong.

Because he’s slowly coming under the thrall of an ancient, malignant presence that has haunted K2 for years. But this entity doesn’t want Phil dead. It wants something far more terrifying...

Wow. A nice surprise.

This was a fantastic audiobook. Both the writing and narration were excellent. I don’t think you could have picked a better narrator to voice the evil entity. It was spot on. I wasn’t sure with only 15 reviews at the time I picked it up but it’s one of the best books I’ve read or listened to in quite a long time.

Read beside a fire

It's a good book. It's kind of what I expected, but it's still well done and worth the read/listen. I have read another book extremely similar to this, but I think I like this one better. The narration was excellent, with one exception. I understand the reason for the strained, weak, desperate sound voice of the main character, but the continuous exasperation wore on me quite a bit. It fit the story, though.
All in all, pretty dang good.

Horror or Gothic Horror?

I've never had any interest in climbing, but the author made the mountaineering aspect of this novel so interesting. The narration was wonderful. Macleod Andrews is one of my favorite narrators and, as always, did not disappoint.

The story kind of went down hill for me after the team reached the summit. It's hard to say more without giving away the ending. The last 1/4 of the story might have been a bit much for me, but the writing was worth the read.

First 3/4 are great but got a bit “messy”

The character development was great! The first half of the story was riveting but it got messy, confusing, convoluted the last 1/4. I couldn’t tell what was real, his brain tumor, the altitude or the demon. (& not in s good way) it just didn’t flow well or make much sense towards the end.

Overall well worth the credit. Narrator was PERFECT! Off to see if he has any other books. & hopefully the next one will be more cohesive! WORTH the credit!
