C'est une théorie poétique aussi vivace que purent l'être celles de la Pléiade et du Classicisme français qui se dégage, comme un parfum spirituel, de ces Fleurs du Mal publiées en volume, pour la première fois le 25 juin 1857. Le principe de l'analogie doit gouverner les images du poète ; celui-ci doit céder aux plus obscures sollicitations de son être ; il n'a point à connaître de la morale telle que le commun des mortels y sacrifie ; il doit dépasser le conflit du Bien et du Mal.
C'est cette "double postulation vers Dieu et vers Satan", comme il l'a nommée lui-même, qui constitue l'ambiguïté originale et féconde de Baudelaire. Ainsi ses poèmes nous dévoilent une conscience terrifiée par le Temps qui la mutile et l'entraîne vers la mort ( L'ennemi) ou bien est la proie d'une imagination titanesque et grimaçante ( La géante) ; mais parfois aussi il s'abandonne à une ardente extase amoureuse ( Les bijoux, La chevelure). Il rêve de pays inaccessibles où la vie serait enfin ce qu'il est interdit ici-bas qu'elle soit ( L'invitation au voyage, Le beau navire). Alors l'amour quitte son masque de hideur et se fait un profond désir, presque religieux, de communion ( La mort des amants). Qu'importe, à cet instant, l'être aimé, puisque le poète donne à la beauté d'une femme le visage même de son plus secret désir ( L'amour du mensonge). Ainsi la femme n'aura été, pour Baudelaire, qu'un bel alibi à ses rêves - et aux nôtres.
La poésie de Baudelaire, si riche en significations, déjà si efficace par les visions qu'elle recèle, est aussi un chef-d'œuvre formel. Il y a en elle un soin du langage, une concision, une science du vers qui font de son auteur un grand classique. Incantatoire, mélodique, parcourue d'élans contenus, perpétuellement soucieuse du mot propre à détenir la plus grande charge de poésie, elle est le langage exemplaire de la poésie française.
