Jade believes she must get out of her neighborhood if she's ever going to succeed. Her mother says she has to take every opportunity. She has. She accepted a scholarship to a mostly-white private school and even Saturday morning test prep opportunities. But some opportunities feel more demeaning than helpful. Like an invitation to join Women to Women, a mentorship program for "at-risk" girls. Except really, it's for black girls. From "bad" neighborhoods. But maybe there are some things Jade could show these successful women about the real world and finding ways to make a real difference.

Twelve-year-old Lowen Grover is still reeling from the shooting death of his best friend, Abe, when he stumbles across an article about a small town giving away homes for just one dollar. It seems like the perfect escape from Flintlock and all of the awful memories associated with the city - and to his surprise, his mum, dad, and older brother are all onboard. Only his sister, Anneth, is reluctant to leave her friends and the familiarity (and amenities!) of Flintlock, but with the rest of the family anxious to do what’s best for grief-stricken Lowen, her protests fall on deaf ears. Story
Our preteen years, ages nine to 13, can present some of the most difficult times in our young lives, a period of tremendous physical and emotional change. We're eager to leave the "kid" stage, yet we're uncertain about what adolescence will bring; we start hearing the familiar refrain "wait until you're older" far too often. Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul is a companion guide for these transitional years.

Christian Contemporary Fiction
This was a very good story. A high school student gets arrested and placed in a foster family after some time in juvenile detention. He finally gets a fresh start in life where he's supported and encouraged, but his path is far from easy. He's dealing with race issues, bullying, building his faith, making right decisions, peer pressure, dating, compassion, dating, and responsibility for his younger siblings.
Janice writes an endearing story for people of all ages. She spent way too much time on lists of menu items, gits, and other unnecessary lists.
While the narrator was pretty good, his sound quality suffered a lot. Each chapter seemed to get more tunnel sounding and echo like. I would recommend the book still, though, because theres a lot to enjoy!

Experience Fostering Children
This story gives a clear, realistic account of what being foster parents can involve when they take in a teen who has been pulled into trouble by a gang leader he thought was his friend. When this black teenager sees that he is being placed with an older white couple, he has his doubts about this working. His only goal however is to be a model citizen and be able to go back to his younger siblings and protect them. It doesn't all go smoothly, but he learns to trust his foster parents and most of all he learns to trust God. This book was so inspirational to me and I am looking forward to the next in the trilogy. This author keeps her books sweet and clean which I so appreciate.
The narrator was good and helped bring the characters to life.
