Publisher's summary

Three years after the events of The Golem's Eye, the young magician Nathaniel is an established member of the British Government.

But he faces unprecedented problems: foreign wars are going badly and Britain's enemies are mounting attacks close to London.

Increasingly distracted, he is treating Bartimaeus worse than ever: the long-suffering djinni is growing weak from too much time in this world, and his patience is at an end. Meanwhile, undercover in London, Kitty has been stealthily completing her research into magic and Bartimaeus' past. She hopes to break the endless cycle of conflict between djinn and humans, but will she be able to get anyone to listen?

Before any of these problems can be resolved, disaster strikes London from an unexpected source, and the destinies of Bartimaeus, Nathanial, and Kitty are thrown together once more. They have to face treacherous magicians, a long-fermented conspiracy, and an enemy from 'The Other Place' that threatens London and the world. Worst of all, they must somehow cope with each other.

Wish this story could go on and on...

This story completely captivated me through all three books. It was impossible to put down and kept me company on walks, cooking, gardening, and driving! Highly addictive! Mr. Stroud and Mr. Jones are a fantastic duo in this great production. I realize I was slow to find this and thank the other reviewers for helping me find a perfect listen.

The narrator, Simon Jones, is fantastic!! I am a 48 year old woman and this trilogy is the best book i have done as audio! Highly recommended if you like Eragon and Artemis Fowl stuff.

An amazing ending to a great trilogy!

While listening to these books, I became attached to the characters, especially to Bartimaeus and Kitty. Some parts of this story were truly heartwarming near the end, and there's enough action and suspense throughout to keep you listening when you should be doing other things... highly recommend. And the narration is one of the best I've ever experienced by a single narrator.

10 / 10

What made the experience of listening to Ptolemy's Gate the most enjoyable?

Great narrator, very, very enjoyable. Excellent story, excellent writing, creative world, interesting characters. I love the footnote style. Barimaus is one of my all-time favorite characters.

What other book might you compare Ptolemy's Gate to and why?

ooooo that's tough - I can't think of any. It's one of a kind. If I knew of any other books like this I would have read/listened to them all.

What about Simon Jones’s performance did you like?

Dynamic, relaxing storyteller.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes it did make me laugh. No crying. It's a book I listen to once a year.

Any additional comments?

I only wish I could find more books like this. It's like Harry Potter (emersed in a different world) but the writing is better and it has more personality.

Jonathan Stroud is a genius. A cruel and twisted genius.

The Bartimaeus Trilogy is one of the smartest and relevant urban fantasies out there. Jonathan Stroud paints a world very much like our own but with the influence of magic reshaping history in foreign, yet somehow still familiar, ways.

The Bartimaeus Trilogy tackles class inequality and the abuses of power in an action-packed and witty as sin narrative. All three main POV characters provide different yet engaging windows into the world they inhabit, with the shining jewel being the witticisms of the titular djinn himself, Bartimaeus. While the story can tackle dark and heavy subject matters, the narrative is never bogged down thanks to the humorous and brilliant insights of Bartimaeus himself.

If you want a romp through a reimagined history with a narrative that doesn't shy away from dark yet snappy subject matter, then the Bartimaeus Trilogy is for you.

The best of the three

What made the experience of listening to Ptolemy's Gate the most enjoyable?

The third and final installment of this series is better than the first two books as the characters are more layered, the story is more exciting and the ending is very touching and a tad unexpected.

Which character – as performed by Simon Jones – was your favorite?

As with the first and second installments, Simon Jones takes this story to an indescribable level by capturing Bartimaeus' personality and "essence" perfectly.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I liked that I was able to put this book down between chapters (until I got to the end).

Any additional comments?

If you haven't read the first two books of this trilogy (The Amulet of Samarkand, The Golem's Eye), I wouldn't start with this one. Without all the back-story there's a lot to miss. That being said, I think this might have been the best of the three.
