Publisher's summary

The legendary icon tells his story - a tale of art, passion, commitment, and addiction, as intense and hypnotic as the man himself.

In a career spanning five decades, Nick Nolte has endured the rites of Hollywood celebrity. Rising from obscurity to leading roles and Oscar nominations, he has been both celebrated and vilified in the media; survived marriages, divorces, and a string of romances; was named the "Sexiest Man Alive" by People magazine; and suffered public humiliation over his drug and alcohol issues, including a drug-fueled trip down a "long road of nothingness" that ended in arrest.

Despite these ups and downs, Nolte has remained true to the craft he loves, portraying a diverse range of characters with his trademark physicality and indelible gravelly voice. Already 35 when his performance in the 1976 miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man launched him to stardom, Nolte never learned to play by Hollywood's rules. A rebel who defies expectations, an obsessive method actor who will go to extremes for a role (he lived among the homeless to prepare for Down and Out in Beverly Hills), Nolte is motivated more by edgier, more personal projects than by box office success. Today he is clean yet still driven, juggling a number of upcoming works and raising his young daughter.

A man who refuses to hide his mistakes, Nolte now delivers his most revealing performance yet. His revealing memoir offers a candid, unvarnished close-up look at the man, the career, the loves, and the life.

One of the best, (if not THEE Best) books I’ve ever listened to.

As an Audible book junkie, I can easily say this was great listening. I felt like I was getting a personal reading and private look inside the man’s life. SUPERBLY narrated. You thought the author was reading it himself. If you enjoy autobiographies from the entertainment world and you’re even SLIGHTLY familiar with Nick Nolte’s work, you’ll love it.

Well Rounded Character

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I am enjoying this book and have already recommended it to several people. Nolte's story is interesting and impressive.

What other book might you compare Rebel to and why?

Rob Lowe's books are similar to Nolte's. The story of fame, fortune, and downfall are uplifting.

Which character – as performed by Nick Nolte and Christian Baskous – was your favorite?

The narrator, Christian Baskous is amazing. He really captures Nolte's voice, tone, and raspiness. His performance makes listening to the story as if Nolte is reading it himself.

Bravo!!!

This life story of Nick is written so beautifully! I worked as an extra with him on I Love Trouble and he was quite a jokester. I truly was having a great time watching him enjoy his craft. This book clarifies his wonderful personality!

Nick Nolte held himself together...

...better than certain other actors in hollywood in the generation before him(his same age because he found fame on the screen in his thirties)

A highly beguiling life.

The narrator absorbed the unusual tempo, tone, and delivery of Nick Nolte. I felt Nick was talking to me about his fascinating life and I was a friend.

What a Gem!!

As I was growing up I followed Nick Nolte’s career. Yet I had no idea he had done so many things. Loved him in A Walk In The Woods. 2 of my favorite actors. This book will make you laugh and bring a tear to your eye as you see what a gentle giant he is. Enjoyed every word.
