Publisher's summary

Affton

I hated Cable James McCaffrey.

He was entitled, spoiled, a user...and an addict.

He was out of control and didn't bother trying to hide it.

He had everything anyone could want but still seemed miserable and lost.

Every move he made, every mistake he stumbled his way through, rubbed me the wrong way. However, I couldn't stop myself from trying to save him from himself when no one else would. In the sweltering heat of the summer, Cable taught me that having it all means nothing if you can't have the one thing you want more than anything else.

Cable

I was obsessed with Affton Reed.

She was rigid, uptight, and no fun. There was something about her innate goodness that called to me.

She acted like she was above all the normal faults and failures that clung to the rest of us like the scent of smoke after a fire. I was infatuated with her, but that didn't stop me from acting like she didn't exist.

In the scorching heat of summer, Affton taught me that there is always a way back from the brink of despair. She showed me that the trick to having it all was realizing that it was already there, in my hands. All I had to do was hold on to it.

The road to recovery is full of twists and turns no matter who is in the driver's seat.

Recovered

Interesting story, it took a little bit to get its hooks into me but once it did I was all in.

I loved that this took place in the same world her Loveless town. Well kinda it was interesting and had connections.

Affton is an interesting name and it took me a little bit to get used to. I really enjoyed the interactions these two have early on and how she doesn’t back down because she knows that if she does he won’t hear her. She isn’t ever afraid of him more so that she was afraid for him. I think he was afraid for himself too for a lot of this book and once he saw that, that was when he really could change. You can’t change for someone else you have to want it for yourself more.

Loved the narration Lance is a favorite of mine but Lucy had that country accent that just fit so well. It really brings you into the story when the narrators sound like the characters.

Thoroughly enjoyed...

I really loved this story. It was sweet with some angst but not overdone with either. The narration was great as well.

Beautiful

“𝙄 𝙬𝙖𝙨, 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙖 𝙙𝙤𝙪𝙗𝙩, 𝙜𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙠 𝙝𝙚𝙧, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙗𝙚 𝙣𝙤 𝙘𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙪𝙥 𝙖𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙙. 𝙈𝙮 𝙥𝙞𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙥𝙞𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙜𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙨𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙠. 𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙗𝙚 𝙣𝙤 𝙥𝙪𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙚𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝙪𝙨 𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙩𝙤𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧.“

I loved this book. It was heart wrenching in the best of ways, leaving me with an aching inside that is indescribable. Maybe because my life was touched in ways by the topics covered in this book. Maybe because it really was just such a good story that I couldn’t not be touched by it.
Affton is a good girl. Because of this, she does what good girls do. She cares. And because she cares, she sets off a chain of events for everyone that couldn’t have been avoided if they had actively tried.
Cable is not a good guy. At least not in the traditional sense. He’s acting out, selfish, spoiled, overindulgent. His meeting with Affton is nothing like you’d expect it to be.
But things change. Lessons are realized. These kids grow up. They stumble, they fall, they prevail. I watched the entire time, transfixed.
This is shelved in my rereads. It’s seriously that good.

Good but lacks

There was an awful lot of telling and not showing in this book. But I suppose I was ok with it. It's just a shame bc it could have been so much better. Maybe that's why I stopped reading Crownover since the Inked series. I never even read Asa's story. But I was intrigued by the addict storyline. And it was good. And it was certainly hot. It wasn't a wasted credit. Read it. I don't think you'll be sorry to be told a hot love story :)

easiest 5 star ever!

there's a story, a reason, and a breaking point for everyone suffering from addiction. sometimes that breaking point ends in finality, and sometimes that breaking point becomes the way out of the fog. Crownover tells the story of one addicts journey through sadness and and heartache. Through depression and anxiety. The love and sometimes hate that finally causes someone to open their eyes. Cable's character can be any one suffering. The story is beautifully written and full of raw emotion.
The narrator's brought this story to life and kept me attached beginning to end

I couldn’t put it down

This is a beautifully written story about two broken souls who find healing in each other. Jay Crownover did an Amazing job writing Cable as both an incredibly hatable and lovable character! Afton’s faith and strength was so beautiful. This story reminded me a lot of Shaw and Rule. I’m not sure how I feel about that, but if you loved Jay’s book Rule, you will like this story. I listened to this book on audible and loved both narrators. I highly recommend it!

Best book yet!

I rarely give a book 5 stars but this book deserves all 5 and more. Such a real, raw look at addiction and love. Jay Crownover is one of my favorites and this book is her best work yet.

To young to know

I love this story and Jay Crownover. I was just having issues with how young the characters were. At 18 years old they just seemed like babies. I feel the sex scenes were too much for 18 year olds. Had they been 21 or older...Idk, it was just my feeling. It was hard to imagine an 18 year old. But the story was amazing as always.
