Publisher's summary

After traveling to Kimberly, South Africa with Niki Chamberlain, a young writer named Brett Marshall has some unfinished business to take care of back in the states. His goal is to expose corruption in high places through his books for which he has become famous for. Yet, this is a dangerous mission, one he is not willing to allow Niki to participate in. Leaving the young lady back at her mansion, Brett catches a train that will deliver him to a ship in Cape Town. From there he will begin the long voyage to Philadelphia where he hopes to meet with his publisher.

However, things go awry and all these well-thought-out plans are suddenly shot to the wind. The spunky young lady has her own ideas about the matter, and soon this leads to big problems for Brett. Before long that is the least of his troubles as someone very powerful is determined to prevent him from publishing his book.

Upon arriving in Deadwood, he meets an old acquaintance who is about to reveal a few secrets of his own. Together they attempt to unravel the mystery behind a certain congressman that is involved in a conspiracy to take over gold mines in Deadwood, as well as diamond mines in Kimberly. To make matters worse, the greedy old tycoon will stop at nothing to obtain great wealth. With gunslingers hired to do away with Brett, the young man must now learn to live by the Code of the West.
