Story
Hugh of Singleton, fourth son of a minor knight, has been educated as a clerk, usually a prelude to taking holy orders. However, feeling no certain calling despite a lively faith, he turns to the profession of surgeon, training in Paris and then hanging out his sign in Oxford. A local lord asks him to track the killer of a young woman whose bones have been found in the castle cesspit. She is identified as the impetuous missing daughter of a local blacksmith, and her young man, whom she had provoked very publicly, is in due course arrested and sentenced at the Oxford assizes.

Story
England in the 1520s is a heartbeat from disaster. If the king dies without a male heir, the country could be destroyed by civil war. Henry VIII wants to annul his marriage of 20 years and marry Anne Boleyn. The pope and most of Europe opposes him. Into this impasse steps Thomas Cromwell: a wholly original man, a charmer and a bully, both idealist and opportunist, astute in reading people, and implacable in his ambition. But Henry is volatile: one day tender, one day murderous. Cromwell helps him break the opposition, but what will be the price of his triumph?

The characters continue to develop with the wild and crazy religious dark ages as a backdrop. The history is accurate as far as I can see.Other than the story, I have to say that Steven Crossley's performance is magnificent.

What an author CJ Sansom is!
Fourth book I've read in the series and just loved it! What a fabulous writer and what an exciting story. The way that the author, CJ Sansom, wrote the story made It easy for me to become absorbed in living in that era with all of that religious tension. It was also easy to engross myself in the Tudor England period.
I enjoyed getting to know the character Guy, a former monk who is now a doctor. It was also very interesting and funny to learn about the false teeth that were becoming popular!
Once again, excellent narration by Steven Crossley!

Fascinating Drama
This richly complex expose of religious strife in Tudor England succeeds brilliantly. The story has impressive depth and strikingly drawn characters. Matthew Shardlake's courage and razor-sharp observations are a fitting centerpiece. His compassion and generosity contrast strongly in the context of the harsh and dangerous times of 15th century London. An excellent "listen."

What a ride!
Okay, it moves a bit slow at times but this book packs plenty of tension and mystery. I was able to figure some things out before Master Shardlake yet that did not dim my enjoyment one whit! The time covered was one of religious strife in England. I came away with a new appreciation of what an intelligent person in England must have gone through during those time. I also came away with a real sense of just how EVIL Henry VIII was.
This man brought terror to a land that had been fairly content.
