Publisher's summary

Orphaned in the cholera epidemic of 1833, Adria Starr was cared for by a slave named Louis, a man who stayed in Springfield, Kentucky, when anyone with means had fled. A man who passed up the opportunity to escape his bondage and instead tended to the sick and buried the dead. A man who, 12 years later, is being sold by his owners despite his heroic actions. Now 19, Adria has never forgotten what Louis did for her. She's determined to find a way to buy Louis's freedom. But in 1840s Kentucky, she'll face an uphill battle.

Based partly on a true story, Ann H. Gabhart's latest historical novel is a tour de force. The vividly rendered town of Springfield and its citizens immerse listeners in a story of courage, betrayal, and honor that will stick with them long after the final moment.

Love this story

Love the storyline.
It was easy to like and dislike characters. I tried to put myself in their shoes, how would I react. I'm not one to keep quite.

Captivating and warm

The narration makes the story come to life. At first I detested the narrator's voice as she brought different characters to life, but I continued to listen because I found the story interesting. In the end, I'm glad I stuck with it.

There were many parts that caused me to smile, others that were a bit predictable, and some that made me say, hmmm...didn't expect that to occur.

I truly enjoyed the spiritual sharing. It reminds readers that we are all children of God, walking our own journey under His care. It also showed how being in a relationship with God impacts perspective - ours and others.

Based on true story

I love how the author honored a slave in Kentucky who had done remarkable works to help the community he lived in. It is a well written historical fiction that is worth listening to.

Power of prayer

Beautiful, partially true story with rich characters, unspeakable pain and God‘s redeeming love. I didn’t want it to end. Ann Gephart may be my new favorite author.

Great Book!

I was led to read this book as I do not read/listen to a book until I read reviews first. This book struck a cord with me and I know why. The solid scripture messages really have spoken to my heart and at a time I needed. Thank you so much Ann Gabhart! I pray believing....
