About this listen

A New York Times best seller, Scary Close is Donald Miller at his best.

From the author of Blue Like Jazz comes a story about finding the keys to a healthy relationship and discovering they are also the keys to a healthy family, a healthy career, and a healthy mind. And it all feels like a conversation with the best kind of friend: smart, funny, true, important.

After decades of failed relationships and painful drama, Donald Miller decided he’d had enough. Impressing people wasn’t helping him connect with anyone. He’d built a life of public isolation, yet he dreamed of meaningful relationships. So at 40-years-old, he made a scary decision: to be himself no matter what it cost.

Scary Close is a book about the risk involved in choosing to impress fewer people and connect with more, about the freedom that comes when we stop acting and start loving. It is a story about knocking down old walls to create a healthy mind, a strong family, and a satisfying career. And it all feels like a conversation with the best kind of friend: smart, funny, true, important.

Donald Miller Weaves a Good Storyline.

This is the first book that I have read by Donald Miller, who is a gifted writer with a knack for weaving personal storyline into his work. Having just turned 40, there were many things in this book that probed my soul and a few things that I took issue with. All in all, Scary Close was a good read / listen.

very engaging

Enjoyable storyline that illustrated deep concepts about dependency, authentic living, vulnerability, connection, accepting the help of a community, and others. The author basically tells his love story and his own personal journey of overcoming his unhealthy patterns of relationships.

fact finding

this book opened up some old wounds but it was time for them to be reviewed. this writing was very helpful, and I really appreciated Don's realness. I don't think I'm the only one who appreciates that

“Me”

Extremely personable and felt more real than ever book I’ve ever read. As in the book he says many and most his reviews say “me” which no matter how many times he’s heard it, it is so true. No matter what relationship struggles you may face, he truly explains things in a universal way that is applicable to relationships of all kinds. If I’m being completely honest, I read this in one day and definitely recommend this to anyone and everyone.

Absolutely Worth the Read

I was skeptical about the book since I normally read either business books or historical books. However, this book exceeded expectations and is now one of my favorites. Many quotable lines, and advice that can change the way you view relationships. Highly recommend.

Disliked narrator

I really liked the book, but I didn't like the narrator. He never paused between sentences or thoughts and hardly even paused at the end of chapters. By the time I was pondering a big idea in the book, the narrator was two more sentences ahead. I didn't mind his Southern accent, even though I know Donald Miller and Bob Goff sound nothing like that. Definitely worth the read, but get this book in hard copy.

Good book but prefer author narrated

I liked this book and I will yet consider the content the author brings about relationships and personality. I like that he uses life experiences to explain himself.

Only I prefer books read by the author them self, such as Donald's Blue Like Jazz. So it would be great to hear from the author(s) directly.
