Told with the same intimate style, brutal honesty, and uproarious wisdom that placed Wishful Drinking on the New York Times best-seller list for months, Shockaholic is the juicy account of Carrie Fisher’s life, focusing more on the Star Wars years and dishing about the various Hollywood relationships she’s formed since she was chosen to play Princess Leia at only 19 years old. Story
When Carrie Fisher recently discovered the journals she kept during the filming of the first Star Wars movie, she was astonished to see what they had preserved—plaintive love poems, unbridled musings with youthful naiveté, and a vulnerability that she barely recognized. Today, her fame as an author, actress, and pop-culture icon is indisputable, but in 1977, Carrie Fisher was just a teenager with an all-consuming crush on her costar, Harrison Ford.

Story
The first story Selma Blair Beitner ever heard about herself is that she was a mean, mean baby. With her mouth pulled in a perpetual snarl and a head so furry it had to be rubbed to make way for her forehead, Selma spent years living up to her terrible reputation: biting her sisters, lying spontaneously, getting drunk from Passover wine at the age of seven, and behaving dramatically so that she would be the center of attention. In a memoir that is as wildly funny as it is emotionally shattering, Blair tells the captivating story of growing up and finding her truth.

When Star Wars burst on to the big screen in 1977, an unfailingly polite golden droid called C-3PO captured imaginations around the globe. But C-3PO wasn’t an amazing display of animatronics with a unique and unforgettable voice-over. Inside the metal costume was an actor named Anthony Daniels. In this deeply personal memoir, Anthony Daniels recounts his experiences of the epic cinematic adventure that has influenced pop culture for more than 40 years. For the very first time, he candidly describes his most intimate memories as the only actor to appear in every Star Wars film.

In "Books and Roses", one special key opens a library, a garden, and clues to at least two lovers' fates. In "Is Your Blood as Red as This?", an unlikely key opens the heart of a student at a puppeteering school. "'Sorry' Doesn't Sweeten Her Tea" involves a "house of locks", where doors can be closed only with a key - with surprising unobservable developments. And in "If a Book Is Locked There's Probably a Good Reason for That Don't You Think", a key keeps a mystical diary locked (for good reason).

Today, her fame as an author, actress, and pop-culture icon is indisputable, but in 1977, Carrie Fisher was just a teenager with an all-consuming crush on her costar, Harrison Ford.

Henry Winkler, launched into prominence as “The Fonz” in the beloved Happy Days, has transcended the role that made him who he is. Brilliant, funny, and widely regarded as the nicest man in Hollywood (though he would be the first to tell you that it’s simply not the case, he’s really just grateful to be here), Henry shares in this achingly vulnerable memoir the disheartening truth of his childhood, the difficulties of a life with severe dyslexia, the pressures of a role that takes on a life of its own, and the path forward once your wildest dream seems behind you.

Carrie Fisher's closet
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This is a compelling listen with great warmth, sardonic humour, and cutting perceptions about a life observed.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Shockaholic?
Fisher has the art of observation nailed; of others and herself she can sum up a complex situation in a sentence. The more complex ones, in a word.
What does Carrie Fisher bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The exasperation of her life predicaments.

Funny, sad, and very satisfying.
Would you consider the audio edition of Shockaholic to be better than the print version?
Carrie Fisher is one of the great American humorists and her timing and inflections are infinitely better than anything my mind could come up with. Her story is deeply personal and it is somewhere between a treat and an honor to hear her narrate her story.
What other book might you compare Shockaholic to and why?
Wishful Drinking
Have you listened to any of Carrie Fisher’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not but I want to hear everything she's done now.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Carrie Fisher's depiction of her father and their relationship was deeply moving. Eddie Fisher didn't deserve her love or forgiveness but she deserved to give it. The same with her building a relationship with Elizabeth Taylor, no one would fault Carrie Fisher for resenting Liz, but the scene where she let's Liz push her into a pool was cathartic and healing for both of the--only in Carrie Fisher's world does this happen!
Any additional comments?
This is great to listen to in your car or home, but be careful in public because you might alarm strangers by snorting with laughter.

Fun and Intelligent read
Where does Shockaholic rank among all the audiobooks you???ve listened to so far?
Way up there. Author is witty and insightful.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Shockaholic?
Pointing out that what's experienced in childhood (in her case celebrity) becomes normal.
What does Carrie Fisher bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?
Since the author reads the book herself it feels like she's telling you HER story. Plus, unlike some authors who read their own books, she's an actress so is able to do it well.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When she spoke about her pain and how drugs were used to numb it.

A satisfying, but different, 2nd installment
What did you love best about Shockaholic?
Carrie Fisher was a one-of-a-kind woman with stories that will never age and a wit that will live on. While we were told one part of her life in her first memoir, "Wishful Drinking," we get a completely different take here.
Any additional comments?
I will say, though, that this is a more subdued book. Fisher is less animated and more matter-of-fact..and the narration is a tad slow. However, that is not much of a problem when you up the speed to 1.25

One of the Best Carrie Fisher Books Ever
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I've always liked Fisher's caustic wit and candid honesty about her life, Shockaholic has to be one of her most candid and funny books ever. I'd reccomend it for someone who needed their spirits lifted.
What did you like best about this story?
Insights into Ted Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor, and Michael Jackson.
Have you listened to any of Carrie Fisher’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
One of the best.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When Fisher and Elizabeth Taylor reconsiled.
Any additional comments?
This is a good book for people suffering depression, it shows that one can over come their mental illnesses if one is willing to take risks and take control of their lives.

Really great storytelling.
I never saw her shows. I wasn't a big fan of her movies — more the content of the films than her, truthfully. And, then, I happened to hear her reading from her book here (sample clip from Audible.com), and boom: I was instantly hooked in about 2 minutes.
I'm almost finished the first-through, and I will re-listen to it as soon as I'm done. Delightful.

She writes beautifully and speaks with a "just trying to keep it real" vibe while her candor and tone is very endearing especially in regard to her father
