About this listen

This is the story of a few strange hours in the life of a troubled teenage boy.

You mustn’t do that to yourself, Shy. You mustn’t hurt yourself like that.

He is wandering into the night listening to the voices in his head: his teachers, his parents, the people he has hurt, and the people who are trying to love him.

Got your special meds, nutcase?

He is escaping Last Chance, a home for “very disturbed young men,” and walking into the haunted space between his night terrors, his past, and the heavy question of his future.

The night is huge and it hurts.

In Shy, Max Porter extends the excavation of boyhood that began with Grief Is the Thing with Feathers and continued with Lanny. But here he asks the question How does mischievous wonder and anarchic energy curdle into something more disturbing and violent? Shy is a bravura, lyric, music-besotted performance by one of the great writers of his generation.

Not the demographic

I am not the targeted audience for this book so I didn’t quite enjoy it as much. I did appreciate the aspect of what seeing what goes through a troubled teenage boy’s head and that it’s an easy read but overall, this story wasn’t my favorite.

Harrowing novel, gorgeous performance

Another brilliant work by Max Porter. I’ve had many gut-punches reading his work. I’m not always sure reading makes you more empathetic, but reading Max Porter does. It’s a gripping, propulsive read/listen. Best for folks who care about language and don’t need a standard plot with character arc + tidy ending.

The performance is why I buy audiobooks. This.

nails a teenage boys mimdset.

it was difficult to listen to it all. Shy was almost too relatable. I found myself thinking very similar things to Shy. it was honestly too real to being a teenage boy.

Not for Me, too much drama

Don’t know how this book got in my feed, possibly Audible thinks that I am similar. After 45 minutes of listening to the angst that “Shy” was in, suffering without changing, I have had enough and I fast forwarded to the end. Maybe it got better but I doubted it would. If you find some redeeming qualities in the later 2/3 of the story, please tell me.
