Publisher's summary

Persistent faith brings redemption and reconciliation.

Propelled by blind love, Mary Rachel Buckmeyer defies her father to elope with Caleb Wheeler. The newlyweds run off to California then partner with his cousin in his dry goods business.

Unbeknownst to the young bride, her new husband sends his kissing cousin ahead. He wants his love and his new wife's money, too. Betrayal and murder drive Mary, soon a young mother, to the depths of despair. But she hates the man who loves her enough to cover her sins and deliver her out of the horrible pit she's dug for herself. Or does she?

Mary Rachel travels from frontier Texas to the raw bone boomtown of 1850s San Francisco gold rush days, then all the way to genteel New York to find redemption for the sins of her mothers.

Finding Love

Loving this series. Good narrator. This is Mary Rachel's story. Her Father tells her that Caleb is not good enough for her, before he leaves on a family trip. While he is gone, she elopes with Caleb. She is so in love with him, that she doesn't see all the bad things. They set off for San Francisco and the Gold Rush era to start their new lives and business. Little does she know, that she is being used by Caleb and his cousin, for her money. Mary will make the best of it, but can she redeem herself to her Father.

History repeats itself

Great job Caryl with this book. It keeps moving quickly, keeping my interest piqued along the way. Hard to quit listening to!! God gives to those who humbly ask and have repented of their sins as the characters in this book have learned. Christians even in these times had to deal with deceit, lies, hurt, and lures of the world as we do today. They, like us today need to lean on God for help in times of trouble.

A Journey of Healing

What an emotional story. Mary Rachel is really headstrong and opts out of going with her father and mother to Europe. Instead she stays and elopes with Caleb Wheeler, a man her father did not truly approved of, and he takes her to California to make his fortune. But Caleb has secrets and in the end he ends up dead.
When she becomes a widow, many men vie for her hand but there is only one that is true and can bring her the redemption she needs.
I hung on every word as delivered by the fabulous Lisa Baarns and with Caryl's amazing story telling, I felt like I was there with the characters. So many twist and turns to find the joy that Mary Rachel deserved.

Not what I expected

I have several feels on this book. While I thought it was well written and characters well developed, it wasn't what I expected from this author. A girl runs off to marry someone her father doesn't approve of and while supposedly the money she takes is hers, she had to breathe a sigh of relief that her father had not changed the code to his safe for her to get it. After she finds herself widowed, she commits fornication which later we find was actually an act of adultery. So while there is good in the story as well, I see , theft, fornication, adultery, and fornication between relatives, it's just not something I normally would have read or listened to.

The narration was done well.

I did receive a free copy of this audiobook from the author and have voluntarily left this review.
