About this listen

All empires eventually fall....

The United States is no exception...

And out of the embers, a lawless new empire will rise....

Across the world, the United States recalls troops to combat civil unrest after the biggest economic meltdown in history. Marine Sergeant Ronaldo Salvatore’s platoon comes home to a powder keg that could ignite a civil war. While some see the coming collapse as the end, others see opportunity.

Fleeing Naples after rival crime lords decimated his family, Don Antonio Moretti settles in Los Angeles to rebuild his criminal empire. But he is far from alone in his ambitions - the cartel and rival gangs all want the same turf, and they will sacrifice their own soldiers and the blood of innocents to get it.

As open warfare erupts across the states, Salvatore fights his way back to LA, where his son has joined the police in the battle for a city spiraling into anarchy. Family is everything, and the Morettis and Salvatores will do what they must to protect their own. But how far will they go to survive in a new economy where the only currency is violence?

The explosive new Sons of War series is a harrowing and realistic depiction of what a second American Civil War and the aftermath might look like, from former Homeland Security Disaster Mitigation Officer and New York Times best-selling author Nicholas Sansbury Smith.

Love this new series!

Love this story about competing crime families in LA vying for being the top dog in Los Angeles after a world-wide economic collapse. The characters are gripping - some you love and some you love to hate. You don't need monsters when you have evil men. Can't wait for the next book to come out!

Great Book

This fast-paced book will keep you on your toes from the first page.

After the biggest economic meltdown in history, a civil war breaks out in the states. With the marines disbanded Sergeant Ronaldo Salvatore fights his way back to LA and his family.

Don Antonio Moretti is in the middle of rebuilding his criminal empire after fleeing Naples, when the war hits. Family means everything to the Morettis, and to survive, they make some otherwise unusual alliances.

These two families try their best to survive while fighting tirelessly to get their city back.

If you've read NSS, you're used to his unique sci-fi monsters. There might not be Variants in this book, but there are most definitely monsters.

I'm patiently awaiting the next installment coming this fall.

good but not engaging

I like the author and the narrator. The story was ok, but I never felt that "one more chapter" tug. The characters were ok, but I never felt drawn to them. I'm disappointed that the two families never seemed to do more than pass on the street. I would have enjoyed having Don and Vinny become friends.

A New Take on A Favorite Genre!

Smith once again has me hooked! I can’t wait to see what happens with the two families that are introduced in Sons of War. Post-apoc is my favorite genre but Smith spins it in a new and fresh way. With few deaths nationwide after the event he paints the landscape of the many fighting for the few resources and the powerful fighting to seize more in the vacuum left by the event. With subtle overtones of The Godfather and Goodfellows he introduces mobsters and good guys both!

Could it happen?

Terrifyingly terrific. The premise exists and the possibility is conceivable. The author and narrator have done a marvelous job and kept me up three nights in a row.

Great Story of War and Family

Smith brings us into the world of fallen government, gangs and family. The government has fallen, so who is going to pick up the pieces? Who gets to profit?

Smith was able to tell a tale that put you into an old school mafia movie, while at the same time implement new-world post-apocalyptic life drama. I enjoyed it, often giggling like a child on the dialog, but I don't know whether or not to move on to book 2. But I do enjoy Sansbury's work. So I probably will.

Powerful - Edge of your seat

Destruction of a government while gangs and mobsters battle everyone! Will keep you entertained and at your edge of your seat... while only half way through the audio, I could not wait for other books in the series. Will not disappoint!

could not help but ask why should I care

honestly throughout the entire story I kept asking myself why do I care about a crime Syndicate operation? in truth I didn't care. the author failed to give me a reason to. this is why I'm giving the book low rating.

Depressing

I like NSS. I’ve listened to almost all his other work. This is the first time I had to convince myself to keep listening in hope that it would get better. The story has plenty of action. But honestly, I don’t understand the purpose of it in this story. the story is bleak - I understand it’s a post apocalyptic story but this one seemed pretty hopeless No one to root for, nobody to care about really. I will keep listening to NSS, just not this series. Ray Porter - per usual - was amazing. It was mainly because of his narration that I kept listening.
