Publisher's summary

My name is Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Conjure by it at your own risk. I'm a wizard. I work out of an office in midtown Chicago. As far as I know, I'm the only openly practicing professional wizard in the country. You can find me in the yellow pages, under Wizards. Believe it or not, I'm the only one there.

With rent past due and a decent meal becoming an issue of some importance, Harry needs work, and soon. A call from a distraught wife, and another from Lt. Murphy of the Chicago PD Special Investigation Unit makes Harry believe things are looking up, but they are about to get worse, much worse. Someone is harnessing immense supernatural forces to commit a series of grisly murders. Someone has violated the first law of magic: Thou Shalt Not Kill. Tracking that someone takes Harry into the dangerous underbelly of Chicago, from mobsters to vampires, while he himself is under suspicion of the crimes.

Good but...

Butcher is a good story teller but I do think that he made Dresden to be a bit too useless and too full of baggage. My friend said that Dresden gets better in the later books

Great book and narrator!

Fell in love with the story and the storytelling from the start! Listened to the whole book in less than 24 hours. Addicted and need more, so I'll have to pick up the next book and keep going!

Excellent book and narration

I don't often write reviews for my Audible content, but I just loved Marsters' reading of this book. He captured perfectly the Sam Spade jaded private eye feeling of the novel.

Good Story, Entertaining Listen!

I quite enjoyed this introduction to Harry Dresden - the story itself is quite entertaining, a great blend of mystery/dectective and magic/supernatural, with some very fun characters who have a lot of potential for interesting growth in the rest of the series.

Like others found some of the sound editing distracting at times - you often hear long exhalations and swallowing throughout the reading, and on top of this at times there are odd breaks in the narration. After reading about this in other reviews, I was a little hesitant to buy this book due to this issue; however, in the end I found this more to be a mild distraction that didn't stop me from enjoying the book overall. In fact, outside of these issues, I really felt James Marsters voice and fit the character and tone of the book very well.

I will definitely be continuing along with this series - hopefully the editing issues are fixed but if not I can definitely see past it!

Some odd character choices and plot contrivance

Overall a decent story, but the author is clearly still refining their craft. The reading is well executed. I will check out the next in the series.

Great Story/Awesome Narrator!

This book is unlike any that I've read. I love supernatural beings in any case and I love how this book kind of includes them all in a sense. This story, in my opinion, was not predictable, which I loved! Most books that I read are in fact, predictable. That being said, I know this is a mystery so it goes against its nature to be predictable. I love the characters, especially Harry, of course. The narrator did a FANTASTIC job of pulling off his sarcastic, down to earth personality. He gave the character an interesting twist that I don't believe a lot of narrators can accomplish and it seemed somewhat natural, as if he WAS the main character himself. Wonderful job on all ends. Glad to know Mister survived. LOL Already purchased the second book!

Pretty good story...

I downloaded this because I saw that someone who read the Iron Druid thought that it was a lot like this series, so as much as I like the Iron Druid I decided to try this. Well, I have to say that it was a good story but to me the Iron Druid is much more entertaining and has better narration. I will try a few more of these to see if they get better as the series moves forward.

A good start

This is my first Dresden File book. It was ok. It started off slow but picked up with a lot of action. The story was well written but the dialogue was a bit corny. But that only added to the charm of Harry Dresden. Harry is a bit of a slacker with old fashioned values. He is always one step behind and unprepared which is unfortunate because the bad guys are always prepared. He manages to escapes some tight spots with his wit and wizardry skills. All in all it's a good book.
