Publisher's summary

My name is Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Conjure by it at your own risk. I'm a wizard. I work out of an office in midtown Chicago. As far as I know, I'm the only openly practicing professional wizard in the country. You can find me in the yellow pages, under Wizards. Believe it or not, I'm the only one there.

With rent past due and a decent meal becoming an issue of some importance, Harry needs work, and soon. A call from a distraught wife, and another from Lt. Murphy of the Chicago PD Special Investigation Unit makes Harry believe things are looking up, but they are about to get worse, much worse. Someone is harnessing immense supernatural forces to commit a series of grisly murders. Someone has violated the first law of magic: Thou Shalt Not Kill. Tracking that someone takes Harry into the dangerous underbelly of Chicago, from mobsters to vampires, while he himself is under suspicion of the crimes.

Everything It Was Said To Be

This was a fun mingling of pulp detective and fantansy. Good characters with depth to their personalities and a solid story. My friends have been recommending this series to me for years and I'm glad I finally gave in.

Personal Demons

I've always wanted to get into The Dresden Files so, I finally got book one. Loved the story and the characters, but the reader kept doing that lip smack swallowing thing that people do and it was like nails on a chalkboard to me. I'm sure nobody else noticed at all, just my personal demons ruining the immersion

It's been a while since any book captured me so

First time I started and ended an audiobook in a matter of just over 24 hours. It was exactly what I wanted.

While I'm sure much has been said about the book's fantasy elements, one thing I want to draw attention to is Dresden's role as the "archetypal" private investigator. Anyone who's spent much time reading PI novels knows that the main character is often a brooding asshole, but ends up having at least some redeeming qualities. But, at the core is still a depressed grouch who refuses any help to get better. I was hesitant to start this at first because I was getting pretty sick of brooding assholes, but everything else about the book's summary, as well as friends recommendations finally had me start it.

Dresden's idea of brooding is being sad when he isn't able to talk to his friend in the morning over a cup of coffee.

I was thoroughly delighted that a PI story had a main character who, while somewhat stoic, definitely snarky, and a wise ass, was still at his very core a good person, wants to be a better person, and is using his dark past as fuel for his fire rather than an anchor constantly weighing him down.

A lot of fun

I really like the main character. He’s disarmingly humble when appropriate, but also kind of a bad ass when appropriate. The dialogue is clever.

Interesting narrator

When I first started listening, I did not like the narrator's style. But as the book went on, he grew on me. It felt like this is how Harry would sound and talk. It just fit. That along with a compelling story with some satisfying conclusions, this is a great read.

Fun story

The narrators deep breaths were annoying. His voice was good , but didn't need the dramatic breaths.
