Publisher's summary

A five-time Moth GrandSLAM winner and bestselling novelist shows how to tell a great story - and why doing so matters.

Whether we realize it or not, we are always telling stories. On a first date or job interview, at a sales presentation or therapy appointment, with family or friends, we are constantly narrating events and interpreting emotions and actions. In this compelling book, storyteller extraordinaire Matthew Dicks presents wonderfully straightforward and engaging tips and techniques for constructing, telling, and polishing stories that will hold the attention of your audience (no matter how big or small). He shows that anyone can learn to be an appealing storyteller, that everyone has something “storyworthy” to express, and, perhaps most important, that the act of creating and telling a tale is a powerful way of understanding and enhancing your own life.

Engaging

I have lead a pretty vanilla life. I can only imagine right now that I have only a few stories. I hope that doing Homework for Life and the other exercises prove me wrong! This book is funny, engaging, and I soaked in as much as I could. I have already altered the way I engage in conversation, and I hope that I will become easier to listen to, and more inspiring to people through these techniques. Cheers to Matthew Dicks. I also don’t write reviews very often at all.

interesting and informative

This book is good from the beginning to the end. My personal favorites were the story breaks when the author pauses in his instruction to demonstrate how to tell a great story. It's one thing to teach how to do something. It's another to show how it's done. I'm grateful for how much effort the author put into producing an interesting and informative book.

Keep Listening

I almost returned this title, but I'm glad I stuck with it. I wanted something that corellated with novel crafting. This book mainly discussed storytelling from the perspective of a stand-up speaker, who tells true stories.

The author has written novels, but does not touch on this in his book. This book goes much deeper than any medium of storytelling; it goes to the heart of the craft, and does give fresh out-of-the-box examples you use on any medium of fiction. highly recommend

Great book! On my second time through!

I’ve been writing a book for 25 years and I just couldn’t figure out how to pull it together. I believe with the tools in this book, I will finally be able to finish it. Thank you!!!

Outstanding

This is one of the best copywriting books I’ve ever read. Yes I know that’s not why Matthew wrote it, but you’d be insane not to read this book if you’re a copywriter.

More importantly though, this is a book about how to move people forward through the power of story.

It’s outstanding.

Master Craftsman Sharing His Tools and How to Use

At the end I walked away form this book having a deeper appreciation of a craftsman and the work and diligence they put into their craft. We often see the finished product and are amazed by what we see or hear, not understanding the upfront work. This book takes us behind the scenes of the craft of storytelling and shows us the work and skill that goes into making a story stand out how how people connect with a great story. Take the lessons learned, apply them and you go from a good storyteller to a great storyteller. In the process you will leave whatever audience you have in front of you with a little piece of you.
