About this listen

The great Amherst Mystery, which took place in Amherst, Nova Scotia, is among the most compelling hauntings of the late 19th century. The truth about the events that took place there are hotly debated to this day.

In this compelling debut novel, author Kendall Roy delves into the lives of the family that lived there and the fateful events that transpired, marking the family's daughter Esther as the target of several sinister poltergeists. Much to her family’s horror, her body was painfully tormented as the spirits took her over. Doctors and priests were called into the house, but all efforts to save her were futile.

The story of what took place in that fateful home was already a local sensation when Walter Hubbell, an actor with an insatiable curiosity of the paranormal, arrived at the cottage of Dan Teed in the summer of 1879. Over the course of his six week stay, Hubbell himself was first person witness to a variety of unexplainable and dangerous poltergeist-like events. This is his story.

Amherst Haunting

This was a fairly entertaining book about a young woman who was (seemingly) possessed by demons. The tales of the events surrounding Esther were creepy and haunting and it is hard to imagine the things that she and her family experienced.

There were several things that kept this from being a great book. First of all, the description says that it is a novel. Then, it claims to be a true story (Shades of Amityville Horror, anyone?). Also, there were a lot of characters thrown into the story in quick succession and I had a hard time keeping track of them all when listening to the audiobook. I would have liked to know more about these people, more about the supposed source of the possession and the outcome. All in all, I felt like there was something lacking in the book.

The narrator did a good job and kept my interest.

Good Listen.

I'm a big horror movie fan. Books aren't any different. This was a good listen. It had a good storyline, and was entertaining.

great story the narration lost me

this is truly a great book hands down, let's start with that. the narration IDK if it was monotone or what it just didn't really keep me going but I listened too it all for the story for sure. Maybe it's my short attention span IDK but the book is very good.

It’s okay

As I was unfamiliar with this story and history, I was interested to hear about this because I like ghost stories and paranormal subject matter. This wasn’t the most interesting book on the subject I’ve ever listened to but it is short (about an hour and a half) so it’s okay.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

A creepy little story

Spoiler alert-
I did enjoy the story. It was an interesting listen.
My problem is the description. It says the girl is possessed by the devil. And that's never said in the story. Another description is given for the reason all the scary things are going on. It feels like the possessed by the devil tag belongs to another story. I did still enjoy it, so I would recommend it to other horror readers.

A good story, needs a little zest

I’m a paranormal enthusiast, so this seemed like some solid fun for listening.
Starting with the story…
There was a bit of length to the starting descriptions. I can understand the need for it, as once the scene is thoroughly set, the author is free to plunge us straight into the bulk of the story. It’s a good idea, but there is the risk that some listeners may get bored of that. However, once the rhythm shifts to the paranormal, starting with some ominous mundane events and backdrop, that is when it gets exciting.
On a side note, may be it was just the times, but the dialogue felt a little wooden in places. That might also be in part from my next assessment.
Narration: Caleb Monroe holds a voice with a great deal of potential for ominous and horrifying fiction. It has a feel that reminds me of the opening narration to the first resident evil movie. There is just one issue I have. I would like to see some tone variations that compliment the story to the moments as best as possible. This isn’t to be confused with doing different voices to characters,
Aside from that, it was good; much better than some mainstream horror floating on audible, so I really hope to see more.

Nope

Ahhh sorry not for me.
2 star listen, I felt a little board and the story was short and didn’t hold my interest.
Sorry team.
