Publisher's summary

Wellman's work will be remembered, and should be preserved because it combines the dark gothic tradition of the American pulps with a detailed snapshot of regional history and culture. This mixture is shown through the lens of the American modernist tradition, revealing something that is larger than the sum of its parts.

This is Volume Two of a five-volume set collecting all of Wellman's Appalachian fantasy stories. Contents:

  • "The Devil Is Not Mocked"
  • "The Pineys"
  • "Hundred Years Gone"
  • "Where the Woodbine Twineth"
  • "Keep Me Away"
  • "Come into My Parlor"
  • "Yare"

And more!

Editorial reviews

Manly Wade Wellman has found his way into the canon of American gothic short fiction. The Devil Is Not Mocked and Other Warnings brings together some of his most intriguing and hair-raising tales of terror and danger. Known for his portrayal of the American Appalachians, Wellman has carved out a niche as one of the greats in science-fiction and fantasy. Brian Troxell and Kristin Kalbli team up for the performance of this audiobook to great effect. Troxell and Kalbi both understand the sense of mounting dread that characterizes Wellman's unnerving work.

more Wellman pulp brilliance...

I really love the Fiction of Many Wade Wellman. he writes with an economy of words. His vocabulary is approachable and vernacular. the stories are great fun, spooky, and the good guys often win. It's great stuff.
