Historia
The stories we read--and the conversations we have about them--help shape family traditions, create lifelong memories, and become part of our legacy. Reading aloud not only has the power to change a family—it has the power to change the world. But we all know that connecting deeply with our families can be difficult in our busy, technology-driven society. Reading aloud is one of the best ways to be fully present with our children, even after they can read themselves, but it isn't always easy to do.

But how can parents compete with all the other noise fighting for their kids' attention? The answer, says Greta Eskridge, is to break free from regular routines and familiar comforts of home to experience new places and adventures - even if those adventures go awry. From simply reading a book together to going on an overnight backpacking trip, activities together provide unique and crucial bonding opportunities.

One of the very best scientific predictors for how any child turns out - in terms of happiness, academic success, leadership skills, and meaningful relationships - is whether at least one adult in their life has consistently shown up for them. In an age of scheduling demands and digital distractions, showing up for your child might sound like a tall order. But as best-selling authors Daniel Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson reassuringly explain, it doesn’t take a lot of time, energy, or money. Instead, showing up means offering a quality of presence.

Resumen del Editor
A Wall Street Journal writer’s conversation-changing look at how reading aloud makes adults and children smarter, happier, healthier, more successful, and more closely attached, even as technology pulls in the other direction.
A miraculous alchemy occurs when one person reads to another, transforming the simple stuff of a book, a voice, and a bit of time into complex and powerful fuel for the heart, brain, and imagination. Grounded in the latest neuroscience and behavioral research, and drawing widely from literature, The Enchanted Hour explains the dazzling cognitive and social-emotional benefits that await children, whatever their class, nationality, or family background. But it’s not just about bedtime stories for little kids: Reading aloud consoles, uplifts, and invigorates at every age, deepening the intellectual lives and emotional well-being of teenagers and adults, too.
Meghan Cox Gurdon argues this ancient practice is a fast-working antidote to the fractured attention spans, atomized families, and unfulfilling ephemera of the tech era, helping to replenish what our devices are leaching away. For everyone, reading aloud engages the mind in complex narratives; for children, it’s an irreplaceable gift that builds vocabulary, fosters imagination, and kindles a lifelong appreciation of language, stories, and pictures.
Bringing together the latest scientific research, practical tips, and reading recommendations, The Enchanted Hour will both charm and galvanize, inspiring listeners to share this invaluable, life-altering tradition with the people they love most.

Historia
In a shallow light-speed world, how can we really know and be known by another person? How do we make true friends? The Digital Age is all about change, but the need for true friendship never changes. We are designed for real engagement with others - for affirmation that goes beyond a simple "like" on social media, for connection over meals, for hope and excitement about the future. Above all, we need to be known and accepted for who we are.

This is the real-life story of Owen Suskind, the son of the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ron Suskind and his wife, Cornelia. An autistic boy who couldn't speak for years, Owen memorized dozens of Disney movies, turned them into a language to express love and loss, kinship, brotherhood. The family was forced to become animated characters, communicating with him in Disney dialogue and song; until they all emerge, together, revealing how, in darkness, we all literally need stories to survive.

Dr. Jill Stamm translates the latest neuroscience findings into clear explanations and practical suggestions, demonstrating the importance of the simple ways you interact with your child every day. It isn't the right edutainment that nurtures an infant's brain. It is as simple as attention, bonding, and communication, and it's within every parent's ability to provide.

How do you feel about setting goals? I’ve heard people say they feel energized, depressed, confused, terrified, pumped, ambivalent, lost...or all of the above. Here’s what I’ve realized: Our relationship to success is inside-out. When we make our New Year’s resolutions, bucket lists, big plans, or weekly to-dos, we’re hoping that when we "arrive" we’ll be fulfilled. Our hearts will swell as we cross the finish line, and then we can finally relax and savor our happiness. Except more often than not, that doesn’t happen....

As boys become young men, their suicide rates go from equal to girls to six times that of young women. It's a crisis of sexuality. Sex is a minefield for our sons. Such a convicting book!!
This book is an incredible parenting book, teacher education book, and book for human beings no matter who you are! I bought the hard copy to write in and underline it was so good. The authors “voices” and accents while reading literature snippets come across as silly and cringe worthy at times but not enough to taint my opinion that everyone should listen to/read this book!!

Excellent! Well researched & presented!
Meghan Cox Gurdon did an extraordinary job researching and presenting the tremendous amount of information that EVERY adult who interacts with children should read! My husband and I read to our child every day from the day he was born until he was almost in high school. I loved every book but especially credit the Redwall series of books by Brian Jacques (whom we met in person TWICE) for my son's expansive vocabulary as he started elementary school--and besides, it is a wonderful tale! If you are a parent or educator, you will not be sorry you took time to acquire and ingest this tome!

All the Feels for The Enchanted Hour
As a mom who read aloud when my sons were younger, as a teacher and grandmother today who grabs every read aloud moment possible, this book was balm to my soul in this distracted cluttered age in which we live. There is far more to this book than I ever dreamed possible. I listened to the Audible while painting rooms in my house. I loved it so much, I ordered the physical book.

A wonderful book!
Loved this book! Have already recommended it. I have always read to my daughter but hearing all the research on the benefits of reading aloud is just wonderful!

well organized and thoughtfully prepared
I love when books are read by the author, it feels like you're really understanding their intention and emphasis. I love reading aloud and I was so happy to hear all of the research that backs this up. Even better, I shared the book with my husband who devoured it and has been joining storytime lately. thank you for this book!

Life Changing!
As a home school mom of over 20 years, I have always known that reading aloud to children and teens has a lot of benefits. As a matter of fact, my favorite curriculum, Sonlight has both readers and read alouds. A few years ago, I was also introduced to a program called Read Aloud Revival which had tons of important information and lists of books recommended. This book though, has so much research that solidifies how important it is to take time to read aloud to your children, your teens, your grandchildren, and even your spouse and your elderly parents or grandparents. This truly is a must read to everyone breathing.
