Publisher's summary

Inspired by The Hobbit and begun in 1937, The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy that J.R.R. Tolkien created to provide "the necessary background of history for Elvish tongues". From these academic aspirations was born one of the most popular and imaginative works in English literature.

The Fellowship of the Ring, the first volume in the trilogy, tells of the fateful power of the One Ring. It begins a magnificent tale of adventure that will plunge the members of the Fellowship of the Ring into a perilous quest and set the stage for the ultimate clash between the powers of good and evil.

In this splendid, unabridged audio production of Tolkien's great work, all the inhabitants of a magical universe – hobbits, elves, and wizards – step colorfully into life. Rob Inglis' narration has been praised as a masterpiece of audio.

I love this audiobook

I love the dramatization and different voices this narrator uses. I had problems reading the Lord of the Rings series myself but since finding this set of audiobooks I have listened to each book at least 2x each.

I finally am able to appreciate Tolkien for the master storyteller that he was thanks to this audiobook.

Tremendous story, but plodding pace

I have long loved LotR, and here it is unabridged. Yet nowhere has the pitfalls of an audio book been made more apparent. In reading, the eyes can skim and consume words, but here the narrator goes through each at his languid pace - even the songs.

Its fantastic, but its also sleep inducing.

The gold standard

This story is the fantasy gold standard. The reader does a good job with the difficult task of coming up with so many voices and of course the singing. Excellent all around.

Phenomenal performance

I tried reading Lord of the Rings over 10 years ago but didn't make it through. I picked up the audiobook and flew through this book. The narrator brought so much to the story that my inner narrator could not bring. The story truly came alive for me and I'm looking forward to continuing my journey into Middle Earth soon.
