Publisher's summary

Inspired by The Hobbit and begun in 1937, The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy that J.R.R. Tolkien created to provide "the necessary background of history for Elvish tongues". From these academic aspirations was born one of the most popular and imaginative works in English literature.

The Fellowship of the Ring, the first volume in the trilogy, tells of the fateful power of the One Ring. It begins a magnificent tale of adventure that will plunge the members of the Fellowship of the Ring into a perilous quest and set the stage for the ultimate clash between the powers of good and evil.

In this splendid, unabridged audio production of Tolkien's great work, all the inhabitants of a magical universe – hobbits, elves, and wizards – step colorfully into life. Rob Inglis' narration has been praised as a masterpiece of audio.

Excellent, a true classic!

Well narrated. A true classic. Tolkien was an amazing author. A well developed story. As someone who watched the film, I appreciated the greater detail in the book as well as some of the missing elements the films glossed over or omitted. I was not disappointed considering I would gladly watch the film again even after having read the book.

Tom Bombadil

I love this story and sharing it with Jet has been fantastic. We have been listening to the audiobooks and Jet has been following along in the hard copy. The combo allows him to hear the narrator consistently pronounce all the challenging words. This story is about the great ring of power created by the dark lord Sauron in ancient times and lost to the world until a hobbit named Bilbo found it on his adventures. The ring passes to Bilbo’s nephew Frodo who is the main character of this story. Frodo collects friends and powerful allies on his journey from the Shire to the Rivendell in the book's first half. The company starts as a band of four hobbits merrily walking through the shire, but as they learn of the actual danger that hunts them their journey takes on a more desperate nature. All along the way they are aided by different folks who see their needs and lend them lodging, help, and protection. In Rivendell, the wise leaders have a council, where they determine the path for the ring of power and its bearer. The fellowship of the ring is created and composed of the four hobbits (Frodo, Sam, Merri, and Pippin), Gimli the dwarf, Legolas the elf, Aragorn the ranger, Boromir the man from Gondor, and Gandalf the wizard and guide. The fellowship sets out from Rivendell intending to destroy the ring of power in the cracks of Mount Doom in Mordor. The company faces many perils as they travel. The fellowship finally breaks at the end of the book, leading in two different directions for the next book.

This is for adventurers, mystics, and students of languages.

May get Hate mail for this.

I love this trilogy. The books are amazing. The movies are amazing. This is what made me love the fantasy genre.

I may be in the minority however in saying that I can’t really stand the narrators voice. I know he has a ton of loyal fans, but his narration makes me drowsy and I lose interest. It was tough even finishing the book.

Sorry everyone.

Finally Audible got it. What a great story!

If you could sum up The Fellowship of the Ring in three words, what would they be?

It is a timeless classic. So much more here than the movies (still great) can get into. You get such deeper insight into the characters. It can be a bit more whimsical than the movies, if that is your only exposure to this story. Great narrator.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Sam is still the unsung hero.

What does Rob Inglis bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

There are a lot of different characters in this book, and Inglis does a great job at keeping them separate.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

There were times that it drug a little long, but over all it was great.

Any additional comments?

Worth the credit.

Much better than the movies, wonderfully narrated.

A wonderful reading of a beloved classic. The narrator uses slightly different voices for each character, between which I could distinguish easily enough. Listening to it almost made me feel as though I myself was a small elf or hoobit child, listening to the elders tell old folk stories of adventure by the fire. By far the loveliest quality of this audiobook for me was the singing of Tolkein's many original songs which weave together the fabric of the many cultures of middle Earth. The narrator sang them in folksy melodies that fit the "race" and culture of the character singing them. It made Middle Earth more real to me than ever, and I now adore this audio version, perhaps more than the physical copies, which is saying something. And of course I now want to go back to learn these songs and perhpas am even inspired to make up my own about the happenings around me like the hobbits and elves. My favorite voice the narrator used was for Gandalf. It was perfect for the character. Definitely recommend giving this book a listen to! If you have only seen the movies, you may be surprised at some of the differences and stories that were left out!
