Publisher's summary

GRIFTER [grif-ter] noun 1. a con or scam artist, a hustler or a sell-out

After the Civil War, the pillars of Black Republicanism were a balanced critique of both political parties, civil rights for all Americans, reinventing an economy based on exploitation, and, most importantly, building thriving Black communities. How did Black Republicanism devolve from revolutionaries like Frederick Douglass to the puppets in the Trump era?

Whether it’s radical conservatives like South Carolina Senator Tim Scott or Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, they are consistently viral news and continuously uphold egregious laws at the expense of their Black brethren. Part history and part cultural analysis, The Grift chronicles the nuanced history of Black Republicans. Clay Cane lays out how Black Republicanism has been mangled by opportunists who are apologists for racism.

Black faces in high places providing cover for explicit bigotry is one of the greatest threats to the liberation of Black and brown people. By studying these figures and their tactics, Cane exposes the grift and lays out a plan to emancipate our future.

I learned so much new information.

This book gave me new insight into an issue that baffled me, and it introduced me to important figures forgotten by history. It also offers realistic ideas about tackling the issue of “grifting”. Plus the prose is lively and well written. This book manages to be informative insightful , and cautionary without being preachy or depressing- never an easy task. Very impressive- and important. Highly recommended.

A Profound History Lesson

This book was extremely enlightening. A must read. I am a history buff and I'm always seeking new knowledge. I am a true believer that those who do not know your history are bound to repeat the mistakes. This book has made me more adamant that I will not only utilize my right to vote but also ensure no one has their right to vote suppressed. Thank Clay Cane for the experience!

Fire!!!!!

Perfect timing in this political/social climate….the Grift is evident with Tim Scott political actions over the last year.

Excellent!!

Thank you Clay Cane for this amazing expose' about the shameless Black drifters among our people for ages. You've done a phenomenal job of pulling the covers off them. And I must also say kudos to you for the outstanding job you've done reading your book. Five star job indeed.
