Publisher's summary

Dive into The Instructor, former Army intelligence officer T. R. Hendricks' fast paced, action-packed debut thriller that's Jack Reacher meets Survivorman, the first novel in the Derek Harrington series!

“Packed with action, tension, and humanity, The Instructor delivers.”—Mark Greaney, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Burner, a Gray Man Novel

Derek Harrington, retired Marine Force Recon and SERE instructor, is barely scraping by teaching the basics of wilderness survival. His fledgling bushcraft school is on the cusp of going out of business and expenses are piling up fast. His only true mission these days? To get his ailing father into a full care facility and to support his ex-wife and their son.

When one of his students presents him with an opportunity too good to be true—$20,000 to instruct a private group for 30 days in upstate New York—Derek reluctantly takes the job, despite his reservations about the group's insistence on anonymity. But it isn't long before the training takes an unexpected turn—and a new offer is made.

Reaching out to an FBI contact to sound his concerns, Derek soon finds himself in deep cover, deep in the woods, embroiled with a fringe group led by a charismatic leader who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. When what he wants becomes Derek's head, the teacher is pitted against his students as Derek races against time to stop what could very well be the first attack of a domestic terrorist cell.

“A pulse-pounding thriller. . . Hendricks delivers on all cylinders!”—Simon Gervais, former RCMP counterterrorism officer and bestselling author of The Last Protector

A rising star

Amazing! I don’t remember the last time I read a debut thriller this good. Maybe The Terminal List by Jack Carr. This book has everything you want in an action book: a formidable yet vulnerable hero, overpowering opposition, and lots of good old-fashioned ass-kicking. I can’t wait for Hendricks’ next book.

A twist I did not see coming!

A home run of a debut, and epic entrance into the thrillerverse for Derek Harrington! Coupled with Jay Snyder’s performance, this is one you do not want to miss!

A great listen!

A really good listen. Especially so, since this is a debut writer. I can't wait to get more from this author and I hope he doesn't do a George R.R. Martin on us.

If you are a fan of the Gray man or Match Rapp series you will love this one (Yes, I am one of those), I binged it during some work-travel. It left me wanting more!

I found the book looking via Jay Snyder. He is simply the best narrator - no doubt there.

Fascinating Premise

The overall character development was good. The only issue with this is a need for external characters to be linked to the plot earlier on.

A new favorite

I tried this book because Jay Snyder has become a favorite narrator of mine. I’m a big fan of the Gray Man series he narrates. I may just go out on a limb and say that I enjoyed this book and character as much as Mark Greaney’s Gray Man. This author isn’t as verbose as Greaney, and I like that. I thought this book flowed nicely, with the right amount of action and suspense. No sex. No cursing for cursing’s sake. Not too touchy-feely. Kept me interested for sure. I have already pre-ordered the 2nd book. I hope the author keeps them coming!

An excellent story

Not only a good story but Realistic character
Development. The narrator caught the protagonist’ emotional conflict without sounding maudlin.
