Publisher's summary

Christina Bennett had taken London society by storm. The ravishing beauty guarded the secret of her mysterious past until the night Lyon, Marquis of Lyonwood, stole a searching, sensuous kiss. An arrogant nobleman with a pirate's passions, he tasted the wildfire smoldering beneath Christina's cool charm and swore to possess her....

But the feisty and defiant Christina would not be so easily conquered. Mistress of her heart and of her fortune, she resisted Lyon's sensuous caresses. She dared not surrender to his love...for then, she must also forsake her precious secret...and her promised destiny!

Rough Start

I love Julie Garwood's books but the beginning of this one nearly made me not finish it. The combination of the narrator's voice and Lyon and Christina's first interactions was so awkward! I'm glad I kept listening, as the story was quite good!

The narrator ruined a wonderful book!!

I have yet to find a Julie Garwood historical novel that isn't great. The Secret and Lion's Lady are two of my favorites. Both books are funny and interesting right up until the last word.

Unfortunately, the narrator ruined both books for me. Her rushed, sing song reading of the narrative is so irritating that your mind shuts out the book and your temper takes over, which is the last thing anyone needs when driving! I find I have to listen to both book in spurts of about 15 minutes, which is a real bother if I am listening to it while doing housework or driving on a long trip.

I'm hoping that the publisher will have a do over, as another reader suggested, on both of these books. I don't know if it was the director who "directed" Ms. Duerden to hurry through the narrative and get it out of the way, or if Ms. Duerden has ruined every book she has narrated by this irritating style. Which ever it is, I hope the audio producer will correct this mistake and prevent it from ruining any more of Julie Garwood's books. I have waited a long time for someone to publish these great books in audio form and hope to purchase every single one. But if Ms. Duerden is the narrator on anymore of Ms. Garwood's books, or any other audio book for that matter, I will skip the purchase!

great story but did not like the narration much.

the story was beautiful. but i really did not enjoy the way the narrator read the story. it was bothering me that she sounded like a robot and she had little emotion put in to the reading. she sounded like she was bored out of her mind her self...

Loved it

I thought that I had read every book Julie Garwood had written so I was delighted to find this wonderful story. The characters were robust and developed at a pace that only this author could achieve. The narrator had such a range of voices that it was easy to identify each character. I will look into other books she has performed. I re-read my library of books by Julie Garwood and I'm so happy to add this book. I recommend this book as well as anything else written by this author.

Loved this story for Years!!

When I found the paperback years ago (many) I laughed and cried throughout. If you like Georgette Heyer, you'll really enjoy this story. I've bought at least 2 more copies and now found the Audible version. It's a fun story with a really bad guy, a great hero, a genuine "Damsel in Distress," some great supporting characters and humor. I have some other Julie Garwood and enjoy them too.

One of my favorites

Always a favorite Garwood novel. Romance, humor, and intrigue as with all of Garwood's writings. Some of my favorite H/h are in this group of books. If you like this genre you'll like this book.

Not a fan of the narration

I loved this book when I first read it but I wasn't a fan of the narration. The main male voice was like a heavy whisper and the voice of the main female almost sounded like a 13 year old girl. Liked the story but not the narration.
