Publisher's summary

Rick Riordan, the best-selling author of the Percy Jackson series, pumps up the action and suspense in The Lost Hero, the first book in The Heroes of Olympus series.

"Riordan extends the franchise in a logical direction while maximizing the elements that made the first series so popular: irreverent heroes, plenty of tension-filled moments fighting monsters, and authentic classical mythology mixed in with modern life."—Horn Book

A New York Times best-seller

A spin-off of the blockbuster Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, but stands on its own

Combines Roman and Greek mythology

Told from the points of view of a diverse cast of demigods

Memorable characters, witty dialogue, and non-stop action have made this series popular across the globe

Perfect for middle grade listeners but can be enjoyed by older listeners, too

Jason has a problem. He doesn't remember anything before waking up on a school bus holding hands with a girl. Apparently she's his girlfriend Piper, his best friend is a kid named Leo, and they're all students in the Wilderness School, a boarding school for "bad kids." What he did to end up here, Jason has no idea—except that everything seems very wrong.

Piper has a secret. Her father has been missing for three days, and her vivid nightmares reveal that he's in terrible danger. Now her boyfriend doesn't recognize her, and when a freak storm and strange creatures attack during a school field trip, she, Jason, and Leo are whisked away to someplace called Camp Half-Blood. What is going on?

Leo has a way with tools. His new cabin at Camp Half-Blood is filled with them. Seriously, the place beats Wilderness School hands down, with its weapons training, monsters, and fine-looking girls. What's troubling is the curse everyone keeps talking about, and that a camper's gone missing. Weirdest of all, his bunkmates insist they are all—including Leo—related to a god.

Fans of demigods, prophecies, and quests will be left breathless—and panting for Book Two.

loved the story and the voice acting/narration, piper needs a little work on some pronunciation but otherwise the story and tone were all there

Great story, bad voice overs.

Jason and Leo are atleast bearable. whoever they have talking for Piper, however, reads every sentence with the same tone: that of a spoiled teen girl. Piper's feeling happy? spoiled teenage girl. pipers mad? spoiled teen girl. The text specifically states that Piper 'growled' her response? better give her a spoiled teen girl voice for good measure.
This on top of the fact RR's depiction of how ANY teenage girl talks or thinks is so off the mark it's embarrassing, makes this book as a whole drop severely in quality.

Great but unorganized

I loved this reading and was pleasantly surprised to see that they had different narrators for different chapters! I was very happy to hear Avi Roque’s voice as well! They’re very good at changing up voices. Sean was also had an amazing vocal range! I was shocked to hear how well the narrator for Jason could make completely different voices. I do wish the narrator for Piper added some variation to the other characters though. I also felt like all of the narrators for the book didn’t get together at all to discuss pronunciation or voice patterns. It really threw me off how different Avi’s reading for Piper was than Rainy Fields’s voice. And Sean Welsh Brown mispronounced some Spanish words that Leo says. It made me wonder if there was a director for this. Sometimes I even wondered if the narrators read the chapters they didn’t narrate. I really enjoyed it, I just wish it was a bit more organized. I hope they can do so for the next books in the series!

Good book, bad narration.

I enjoyed the story but the narration wasn’t good. The reader for Jason was good, Leo needed help with some pronunciation, but the Piper actress was horrible. Her voice was grating, she never changed voice for characters and her pronunciation of almost every name and place was wrong. Hopefully she will be replaced for later books. Still worth the listen though.

You should read this book

You will really like this book. There’s gonna be changes on the different chapters but every chapter is really exciting and really new with adventures. It’s not only Greek but also Roman.

So incredibly disappointed by the voice acting

The narrator for Jason’s chapters was pretty great however listening to the narrators for Leo and Piper was a serious struggle. It seemed as though neither of them read the chapters prior to recording. There were several moments where the Piper narrator’s inflection was completely off and other sections where punctuation was thrown to the wind (I was simultaneously reading the physical book). Leo’s narrator wasn’t nearly as difficult to endure as Piper’s, but still the voices he chose to use for many of the characters felt way off. The story itself was of course fantastic. Another win for Rick.

Should re-record with just one voice

The narrator for Jason is good. He should have read the entire book. Leo’s narrator is okay but distracting sometimes. Piper, though… :-( I don’t think she understands what’s she’s reading. Her tone and flow and emphasis and inflections are all distractingly bad. I keep tuning her out subconsciously and needing to rewind. Multiple voices aren’t needed for 3rd person narration. Needlessly cumbersome.

Great Story, WORST PERFORMANCE EVER

Love the story, obviously. Such a good sequel series, might even be better than the first series.

But this is one of the worst performances I have ever heard in my life (and I read a LOT). The girl that read for Piper’s chapters couldn’t correctly pronounce words and sounded so whiny it was insane, not a single narrator (there are three) did a good job. I’m surprised that such a popular author doesn’t have better people preforming his works. It’s so bad I will not be listening to it again, reading only.

Nice!

Loved it! Narrators weren’t amazing but it’s all good. Really fast-paced. Cool action scenes. Good character development. Thank you Mr. Riordan!
