A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER | GOOD MORNING AMERICA BOOK CLUB PICK

“Gripping, heartbreaking and impossible to put down.”—Laura Dave

A dazzling supernova of a book, it picks you up on line one and doesn't let you go until the very end.” —Lisa Jewell

From the New York Times bestselling author of Ghosted comes a love story wrapped in a mystery: an up-all-night thriller with a dark secret at its core

Emma loves her husband Leo and their young daughter Ruby: she’d do anything for them. But almost everything she's told them about herself is a lie.

And she might just have got away with it, if it weren’t for her husband’s job. Leo is an obituary writer; Emma a well-known marine biologist. When she suffers a serious illness, Leo copes by doing what he knows best—researching and writing about his wife’s life. But as he starts to unravel the truth, he discovers the woman he loves doesn’t really exist. Even her name isn’t real.

When the very darkest moments of Emma’s past finally emerge, she must somehow prove to Leo that she really is the woman he always thought she was . . .

But first, she must tell him about the other love of her life.

Starts slow, but packs a punch!

Amazing! It's rare that a book can leave my mouth hanging open, that I haven't guessed the plot part way into it. This was exceptional.
the voice acting was really good and enjoyable and I forgot it was even a book, it was more like listening to a play.
loved it!

Just too drawn out

Good premise. Enough suspense. Too too slow. Also I couldn’t figure out if it was supposed to be a mystery or a thriller or just fiction.

sooo many twists and turns…the last few chapters tied up nicely, but took a while to get there.

A very interesting idea for a novel

I enjoyed every bit of this book which was so well thought out with fantastic characters and a fast paced story line. I was surprised at the ending which I did not see coming. The narration was wonderful. I will explore other books by this author.

Excellent performance

Enjoyed the performance of this book immensely. The story is really fantastically written but so glad I listened instead of read it.

Book club pick 3.5, heavy drama

This is not my preferred genre, so I'm giving it a 3.5. I can acknowledge it is a good story and well written. However, I would not reread it. It took me a long time to like Emma, but once her full story was exposed, I warmed up to her and had sympathy for her situation. Looking back, that might have been the author's intention the entire time. I liked Leo from the beginning, but occasionally, he and Emma both got on my nerves. The landscape and atmosphere were vivid, and I could easily see the settings.

Most enjoyable

Story grabbed me from the beginning, haven’t been so puzzled by a plot for a long time, lots of twists and turns. Very well done!
