One moment Madeline Jones has it all: a family she adores, a job she loves as an elementary school librarian, and a luxurious home with a breathtaking view overlooking West Sturgeon lake.
Now, almost a year after a terrible tragedy split up her family and left her divorced and broken, she must return to work and face her old life she no longer recognizes. Even more horrifying, her ex-husband has now officially taken over the school principal role and is now her new boss.

She convinces Maddy to agree to follow her instructions in a series of letters that will bring her out of her comfort zone and lead her to stand in front of a tough crowd to practice her dream of being a stand-up comedian. They also lead her to meet a handsome young rock climbing instructor that just happens to fall head over heels for her.
