Publisher's summary

Dead Woman's Ditch. The site of a grisly 200-year-old murder - and a recent hit-and-run. When a young woman's body is found at the macabre landmark in Somerset's Quantock Hills, DI Mike Lockyer and Sergeant Jane Bennett are called in to investigate.

They find a community gripped by fear and superstition. The locals won't venture out at night, believing there's a man stalking the hills - a phantom cloaked in folklore and legend, keeping the sinister legacy of Dead Woman's Ditch alive.

Confronted by a hostile CID team and a murder victim with close ties to their own squad, Lockyer and Bennett will have to accept what they can't see before they can find what's really there....

1 for 4

Well it seems that DI Lockyear and DS Bennett finally, for the most part, solved the crime in this the fourth novel. While there were elements that were convoluted, including a few inconsistencies, overall this was the best of the series so far. While I adore Imogen Church and still rated her performance with 5 stars, there is a passage when the character’s “cold” voice goes in and out.

A struggling mystery

This book starts so well but as it gathers a faster pace it veers into grand confusion. I like the London detective duo and the use of history from 1789. The story line develops well, so well I carved time in my day to listen. If you can forgive the silly ending you will have a good read.

I loved the 300 year old history of the mystery
man who killed his wife and the spooky trips into the old woods with the park ranger telling
the stories to the London CID detectives sent to the tiny village to investigate a modern death.
Country mouse/ city mouse. Not a horror story.
More interesting than most of the British rurals i
so enjoy. Well plotted, written and narrated.

This series gets better and better!

This series keeps getting better, as the primary characters become more complex. I started listening because Imogen Church narrates, which is a compelling reason to try to a book; and I liked the first two novels; but the last two are stellar. Thanks Clare Donaghue, please keep them coming!

Great story!

I enjoy the entire series and kinda bummed there isn't a new book out. Regardless, these are great stories, well written and narrated... absolutely would recommend!
