Publisher's summary

London, England was having an epidemic - of crime. Disgusted by the number of St. Bartholomew's hospital beds occupied by victims of crime, Doctor Pendergrass decided to do something about it. In the dark alleys and byways of London, criminals were whispering about an avenging angel that was hunting them down at night. Pendergrass could do what Scotland Yard couldn't; a criminal gone missing is a crime not committed. After dispatching two of London's most notorious criminals, Doctor Pendergrass and Sarah Shelley investigated several attacks on women by the infamous Spring-heeled Jack. Pendergrass was certain one man couldn't perform the incredible physical deeds reported to police over the previous 55+ years; blowing fire and jumping onto buildings and more. As he and Sarah studied files, and interviewed old victims, the case became personal. A graffitied hospital lobby left no doubt that Spring-heeled Jack was targeting a nurse at St. Bartholomew's Hospital. By analyzing the physical traits of previous victims, they narrowed the number of nurses that could be possible targets; Sarah was one of them. During her interview, an elderly victim told Pendergrass and Sarah how it might play out. It wasn't what he wanted to hear. The number of surgeries performed at St. Bartholomew's Hospital increased so dramatically that Doctor Pendergrass had to forgo his typical afterhours pursuits. When one of London's elite citizens died it was up to Sarah Shelley to look into the suspicious circumstances. When two more men died, Sarah was sure there must be a connection and it wasn't natural causes; it was murder. When a fourth victim barely escaped death, Sarah obtained invaluable clues that might help her track down the murderer. Armed with that information, and clues obtained by breaking and entering, Sarah asked a new acquaintance for help to deal with the perpetrator. It was all off the record.
