About this listen

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you suddenly looked into the eyes of your handsome ex-boyfriend at a romantic wedding in Rome...far away from your husband?

Helen is almost 40, and her boobs are starting to go south. She's also happily married to Mark. But why, then, can't she stop staring at ex-fiancee Rob's big blue eyes from the minute she finds him on Facebook? And why does she agree to go to a mutual friend's wedding in Rome - accompanied by her very loud and touristy mom and even louder gin-and-tonic drinking friend, Lori - when she knows he will be there?

It can only mean one thing: trouble. Things don't get less complicated when Helen finds out that Mark is going on a business trip with his perfect ex-girlfriend (with perfect perky boobs) at the same time somewhere in Germany. Or when he suddenly shows up in Rome unannounced.

A fun, warmhearted, and compelling story, The One That Got Away is a novel about a lot of what if's, how we often take love for granted, and how life doesn't always have to be picture perfect. If you love a fast-paced story with snappy dialogue and lots of humor and heart, this is the book for you.

What If

Helen has been married for almost 20 years and feels her life is dull and uninteresting. She’s invited to a wedding in Rome where she is reunited with an old friend and also her ex-boyfriend, who she feels is “the one who got away.” Seeing him brings up all the old feelings and she wonders “what if.” I think most women, especially 40 something women, can relate to this story. We all have moments where we question our lives and the decisions we’ve made. This was my first book by Charlotte Roth, it was well written with relatable characters.
Brenda Scott Wlazlo did a good job with the narration, giving each character their own voice.

Unique Contemporary Romance

This book was very well written and grabbed my attention from beginning to conclusion. I was not sure how things were going to turn out and I was pleasantly surprised with a very sweet conclusion.

Narration was well done and brought the story to life.

Helen is almost 40 and she started wondering what would have happened if she had married her high school sweetheart. Some jealousy gets the best of her when she sees who her husband has been working with! His beautiful and stylish ex-girlfriend seems to have it all! She has a successful job and has an ex-husband. She starts wondering if she is after her husband!

After much indecisiveness, Helen decides to go to Rome with her mom and best friend to attend a friend’s wedding. Rome is a romantic setting and she sees her ex-boyfriend and starts wondering wether she still has feelings for him. After seeing a picture of his wife, Helen’s husband shows up at the worse possible time. Things are not what they seem and everything seems to go downhill fast!

If you want to know more, you will just have to grab this great Contemporary romance and find out for yourself how everything turns out! You will not be disappointed!

Very Enjoyable Listen

The One That Got Away is a thought provoking listen. The what if’s of the past, of being 40 and worried about others think. It’s also a good reminder that just because all you see on Facebook are good things on your exes profile, doesn’t mean that it is.

Helen and Mark are happily married with two beautiful kids. Helen receives an invite to a wedding in Rome that her ex will be attending. But she doesn’t make the decision to go until she finds out that Mark is working with his ex. Helen is feeling insecure in her looks as well as where she is in life. Not with Mark, but with trying to get back into the workforce after being a SAHM for the last 15 years.

Join Helen on her journey to find herself. She meets new friends along the way that offer much needed insight on life, and how it differs from where it might have been 20 years ago.

Brenda did a great job bringing this story to life. I loved the Italian accent!

Enjoyable Listen

This was a good entertaining read. I have to admit I got frustrated with Helen a few times throughout the story but I was still hooked enough to want to keep reading.

Helen has been married for nearly 20 years and is struggling with the everyday. She's feeling lost and insecure in her life choices, especially as she sees her former classmates' online lives. I love how this book shows the difference between what's shown online is so often different from the reality. You're getting a glimpse into the good parts, and possibly embellished parts, not the actual day to day life. I think a lot of people can relate to the feelings and struggles Helen has. She's stuck between her old love and her current marriage.

Brenda Scott Wlazlo gave a fantastic performance. She portrayed the characters perfectly and gave them unique voices. Her delivery of the humour and drama was great.

The Past or the Present

The author did a great job with descriptions and really helping us feel like we were in the story. We a given bits of information from Helen's past a little bit at a time and we see how the past clashes with the present. I liked how the author incorporated the insecurities that people often feel when looking at other's social media and how easily things can be misunderstood or twisted to look better than things really are. Helen is a relatable character, however, she does some things that are a little frustrating. I enjoyed this easy listen. This second chance romance didnt turn out how I anticipated, but the ending is still satisfying.

The narrator gave a great performance and had good accents that matched the setting well.

Social media Picture Perfect

The One That Got Away is a standalone chick lit audio. Author Charlotte Roth has a way of creating characters that come alive & feel real as her characters are flawed & portray real life realistic people. A intriguing plot showcasing how different actual life is compared to life portrayed on social media. A well detailed description/comparison of the two cities that this audio portrays Seattle, Wa. USA. & Rome, Italy. I got the Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion vibe of nostalga while listening to this audio. This is a sweet, romantic & humorous listen.

Narrator Brenda Scott Wlazlo brings jubilant vibes while listening to this audio. She is able to capture the right sentiments at the right places. Her performance brought out the character's and access to their distinctive voice. Her inflection changed when necessary and realistically portrayed the narrative and characters.

Overall, a swanky entertaining listen that is embodies humor, and heart.
